Cool. Now I have to go through the titles from the 60s and 70s and see if I can find a book I've been trying to remember for 20 years. I'm almost positive it won a Newberry. Thanks!
I went through the list, looking for books I've read, and found I've only read surprisingly few. "Rabbit Hill", by Robert Lawson was a favorite that I read to my kids; I still have my childhood copy of "King of the Wind" by Marguerite Henry. I remember "Julie of the Wolves" by Jean Craighead; and I think I read "A Wrinkle in Time" but I'm not sure.
In any case, now I have a terrific list of books to look into! Thank you for this.
I've read quite a few of 'em, but that's no surprise--I read voraciously as a kid, and then I became a librarian. Island of the Blue Dolphins is one of my favorites. As a kid, I read a lot of books about shipwrecks and castaways and stuff like that.
The Newberry is a good award, but, all in all, I think I prefer the Caldecotts.
I've read quite a few of them, more than I expected. I've been a big reader since I was a kid, but I missed out on a lot of kid books because I read past my age level. I've been reading a lot of kid books recently (I just checked out The Witch of Blackbird Pond from my local library).
box - Island of the Blue Dolphins is one of my favourites too, I couldn't tell you how many times I've read it. If you ever get a chance to go the the Mission in Santa Barbara, take it, that's where Karana/Juana Maria is buried.
