17 August 2009

I had a bad second date, which was preceded by a bad breakup, which was preceded by a sad breakup, which was preceded by a horrible breakup, and now I have given up on relationships. I would like suggestions for a hobby. The more bizarre, the better. Go wild, kids.
A lady on a commercial for "The Office" is doing summer stock with her cats. Next week, they do "A Midsummer's Night Dream".

Bellydance. (It's my latest hobby and it's quite enjoyable.)

Taxidermy?

I'm watching "House Hunters" at the moment, and I think I could make a hobby out of watching this show.

I think you should start playing bridge then we could play online :)

House Hunters is fake. My husband is a television cameraman and he's shot episodes of that show and it's phony. You probably already knew that. It's still a lot of fun to watch. Some of those houses, oy.

Janet, I'm sorry you're having a string of unhappy dates/relationships. It sucks so bad. My brother is going through this right now. I've been there too. I got married for the first time (and only time!) at age 44 after I'd given up on ever finding love.

Personally I think you should start playing Mah Jongg. The real game with tiles and 3 friends, not the silly computer game where you match up pairs. It's challenging, fun and the companionship will do you good.

Maybe you should meet my brother, hmmmmm.

I imagined. What's fake- wait, let me guess. They're not walking through the houses for the first time, they've already picked their 3 favorites, or wait, no, they've already picked the one they want to buy and then they find 2 similar houses to walk through for the show?

Soapmaking. Spinning and knitting. Pretend you're in the 17th century.

They've already closed on their house and they do fake walk-thrus of all of them. They shoot them between closing and moving in, and then go back 6 months or so after they've moved in. It's still really fun to watch. I also like "Designed to Sell".

I'm shocked, a faked reality show? Do they fake the prices? I'm always amazed with the 20-somethings who can pony up for $400K houses on that show.

Ah ha! How about that.

Okayyyyyy, House Hunters is out, I guess. So is getting married at 44, since I'm older than that. But keep 'em coming.

Even if it's fake, it's fun! Don't take it off the table too soon.

How about biking? Getting tattoos? Fostering abandoned boxers (the dogs, not the athletes)?

Hiking! Backpacking! The bonus is that you'll be in great shape and meet all sorts of other people out there doing the same thing. Srsly. Plus, once you have all the equipment, going away is very cheap. The wilderness trails/campsites around here (western Canada) are a whopping $5 a night and that includes parking your car at the trailhead.

Or ... bizarre, huh? How about ferret racing? Or samarai sword collecting? (hey - don't blame me, blame Google!)

Huh, I didn't know that about House Hunters ("Hi, I'm Suzanne Whang!"). I also like Designed to Sell, but prefer Clive to the other hosts.

So, weird hobbies. Hmm. How 'bout collecting full sized grand pianos? Or shrunken heads? Toenail clippings (not yours)?

In tune with Pink- try cycling.

It's great low-impact exercise. It's interesting- you get to explore your city faster than you could on foot, but more thoroughly than you can in a car. There are recreational bicycle riding clubs around; you don't have to race to ride with a group.

And for the bizarre aspect.... get a Dutch bike or a vintage 80s bike. Maybe not bizarre, but definitely distinctive.

Definitely Napoleonic 5mm tabletop wargaming (yeah yeah, I know 15mm or 25mm is easier because of all the different unit types, but the painting's so much easier with 5mm, and the price of a division-level force can't be compared).

I'm pretty confident that bad dates are not a problem for Napoleonic tabletop wargamers.

The way to get a bizarre hobby is by putting two regular hobbies together.

You could knit in a canoe. You could paint pictures on turtles. You get the idea, right? Help me out here.
