Plumbing Woes AKA: My Queendom for a Second Bathroom - I've mentioned in a couple different places here that the mister and I are in the midst of a plumbing problem. Do come inside for an update... [More:]
Current housing status:
Our bedroom has been in the living room (bed, dressers, side tables, etc.) for over a week. Good thing the living room is a big room; it's crowded but usable. We don't have cold water in the kitchen. House usability isn't bad so far.

They don't know where the break in the cold water line is except that it's between the bedroom/bathroom wall and the kitchen. The plumbing was run through the slab of course. We and the insurance adjuster are still waiting for some quotes/info from the plumbing company (are they going to go through the ceiling, a soffit or jackhammer up the slab, etc). The plumbing people are the slowpokes in all of this.

While waiting for the plumbing info we've found out that the bottom layer (there are two layers) of flooring in the bathroom has asbestos in it. We just found out this morning that it's going to take three days or so for the asbestos abatement project. Our insurance adjuster is going to have to find a hotel room that will allow four cats and a dog (we'll shut the rats in the mister's office) and hopefully has a kitchenette. The mister is going to have to take those days off from work and we're both going to go crazy with nothing to do. Maybe the four cats bouncing off the walls will be enough entertainment.

What will have to be replaced (as far as we know at this point):

Bathroom: dry-wall, vinyl and paint. The vanity will be removed and repaired or replaced if it can't be repaired. I want to replace the towel bars and toilet paper holder before it gets painted (they're gold, I prefer silver; we pay for those, of course).

Bedroom: dry-wall, carpeting and paint.

Kitchen: unknown - depends on what the plumbers/insurance decide. Maybe the flooring, most likely some dry-wall, paint if dry-wall is replaced.

Insurance is paying for all of the repair of the decor stuff (dry-wall, paint, flooring). It's still unclear how much of the plumbing stuff they cover. We've asked the flooring people to give us a quote on the kitchen floor. If it's not going to be replaced due to plumbing work and it doesn't cost too much, we'll pay for it to be replaced; might as well while everything is discombobulated.
Ugh, that sounds so completely suckassed. :( But hey! At least someone else is picking up the tab for chunks of it!

That kind of topsy-turveyness is so exhausting. I hope it gets resolved quickly and with the great magnanimity of your insurance company!

That sounds like a giant, slowly unfolding, DRAG! Yay insurance. Of course, the cynic in my wonders how much your rates will jump next year. Whatta racket insurance can be eh?

If it were DIY, the asbestos flooring would not be that much of an issue. If handled carefully, the asbestos in sheet of tile flooring, and/or the mastic is not going to release that many fibers.

But this sounds way over an above what I could do, and I do all of my own stuff.

Good luck. Watch a lot of movies!

The perils of a one-bathroom home! We are in the same situation. If anything in the bathroom breaks, it has to be dealt with immediately, and becomes an emergency really quickly.

Wow... good luck to y'all, deborah.

Egad, what a mess. I'm seconding watching a lot of movies! Or maybe you can find a place with a pool and treat it like a vacation with your furry kids? Good Luck!

Good luck with it all. We have a single, currently fully-functioning bathroom, and a bit of me dreads the day when something goes wrong with it, cos there's no back-up.

Oh my gosh, poor baby. I wish you lived closer, and you could crowd in with us. My critters are amazingly laid back about other animals, and I'm pretty laid back about humans as long as they like bread and strange music. :)

I hope it all works out for you quickly and painlessly!

I don't think the mister really understands how much all this is eating into my comfort zone.

The mister also suggested we take dvds with us. It'd be a nice opportunity to watch the LotR series again.

AND I hadn't thought about a pool. Moving to a hotel for a couple days might not be quite so awful.

Also found out the toilet is going to have to be moved and reseated a couple times. I'm hoping they drop it onto the bathtub and both of them are broken. They're beige. Replacement of those fixtures would be totally awesome.

Anyway - many thanks for reading my bitching!

PS to Dejah: Awww, that's totally sweet of you to offer!

Sigh. I'm in the midst of plumbing woes of my own. Good luck. Want me to come over with a hammer and ding the beige fixtures? Actually, I want a non-white toilet in the upstairs loo, and figure Craigslist will turn one up when I get ready for that makeover.
