Massive mega Ask Mecha: [More:]Why are bags of mixed nuts 90% peanuts?

Do Not Want.
Also, if you could let me know why this pimple on my chin won't go away, that would be great. Kthxbai.

Peanuts are the cheapest.

Pimples? leave them alone and they'll go away.

At 41 I'm a bit relieved to still get them

The no-name ones we buy say "no more than 30% peanuts". Also, peanuts are not nuts at all. They are legumes so I guess 90% peanuts is still 0% nuts.

That pimple is just being bitchy.

The pimple won't go away because you're not eating enough peanuts.

See, these don't come with a guarantee. That sucks. Although they do have a helpful warning saying 'may contain traces of gluten, other tree nuts, sesame seeds and soy due to shared equipment'. Very helpful.

The best warning that I've seen, though, was on the packaging for a bib. It said: 'Warning: this bib is designed to fit an Australian baby's neck'. Just. Wow.

I don't want anyone's shared equipment near my nuts, thanks.

Don't touch the pimple. Wash it and put some antibiotic ointment on it and leave it alone.

Buy your own nuts. Mix. Write the mixed nuts company a letter a la Laslo Toth.

Also, the Australian baby's neck thing? So. very. odd.

Yep. I'm allergic to peanuts, but not nuts. My brother has the reverse. I still can't eat most nuts because they have an annoying tendency to coat them in peanut oil.

You can buy mixed nuts with no peanuts. For a price.

Wiki:

On July 20, 2007, the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University announced that one of its scientists, Dr. Mohamed Ahmedna, had developed a process to make allergen-free peanuts. Initial testing showed a 100 percent deactivation of peanut allergens in whole roasted kernels, and human serums from severely allergic individuals showed no reaction when exposed to the processed peanuts. Food companies have expressed an interest in licensing the process, which purportedly does not degrade the taste or quality of treated peanuts, and even results in easier processing to use as an ingredient in food products.

Huh.

Why don't people do what they say they're going to do?

They either lied or forgot, or something disrupted them.
