Data retrieval from a dead hard drive: hope me, please! [More:]I have a Very Big Problem and I am hoping bunnies can give advice or help. I need to retrieve a very important document from a dead MacBook hard drive. The price I have been quoted for data retrieval is $1500. I cannot afford to pay this much, but I am desperate to get the document back. Can any bunnies give me some ideas on what to do? Is this worth posting to AskMe? Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.
Well, never mind. Hard copy has been found.

Well that's good -- hardcopy to the rescue.

Depending on how the drive died, I don't think the results would have been good ... although I have heard there are some "data recovery" places that are far (like orders of magnitude) cheaper than others. Some seem to charge something like what it actually costs to recover it, others seem to prey on desperate people and charge what they think their service might be worth to you when your back's against the wall.
