Guilty pleasure: Bridezillas, Platinum Brides and shows of that ilk. Surprisingly, I was never one of those little girls who dreamt of her big day.
Guilty pleasure number 2: I used to be ashamed of the fact that I absolutely LOVED Pearl Jam when they came out. Now I don't know why I ever felt that way, but the residual shame remains.
Resisted Art: Battlestar Gallactica and Dr. Who. Don't get it, don't care to get it. I am also not a Terry Prachett fan, nor do I care much for the music of Magnetic Fields. I don't like Jim Jarmusch, as a matter of fact, I would say I nurse an active dislike of the man and his work.
Sacred Art: Don't get me started on how fucking brilliant Salman Rushdie is, because you will never hear the end of it. I will physically punch you in the face if you try to tell me he is overrated.
Guilty pleasure: COPS, Most Amazing Car Crashes and the rest of that series, Two and a Half Men, Ellen (her sitcom).
Guilty displeasure: The Catcher in the Rye (maybe I read it too late). Will Ferrell and James Carrey (except for The Truman Show). Most of today's comedy movies just seem stupid.
Sacred Art: Maxfield Parrish, Calvin & Hobbes, Laura Ingalls Wilder.
There's probably lots more in each category but that's off the top of my head.
Art I've resisted: Entourage, Top Chef, The Apprentice, Amazing Race, Big Love, Buffy, Da Vinci Code, Twilight series, Harry Potter books, The Wire, Spin City, and so many more. I own the entire DVD set of The Wire. I guess I haven't been in the mood. I haven't seen Crash for the exactly the same reasons the article gives.
Guilty Pleasure: America's Got Talent. I love the movie, Mask with Jim Carrey. I actually liked Thomas Kincaid when he first came out. (That was embarrassing to admit.) I didn't know any better. I was a mere child.
Guilty pleasure: Robert Heinlein juvenile novels, pop songs from 70's rockers like Jerry Doucette and Jay Ferguson, Trilogy Of Terror, any Vincent Price movie, 80's hair band ballads, and any cheap movie made in New York City in the 70's.
Guilty (not really) displeasure: Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen, Reality TV, Michael Jackson, Chuck Klosterman, Star Wars, and award shows.
Guilty (really) displeasure: Steven Spielberg movies except for Duel and Jaws.
Sacred Art: Picasso paintings, Miro works, Kubrick films, Billy Wilder films, Henri Cartier-Bresson photos, Man Ray's works, the King James Bible, Hank Snow, Johnny Cash, Mozart's Requiem Mass in D minor, Puccini's Madame Butterfly, Antoni Gaudí's buildings, the Avro Arrow, Norval Morrisseau works, Tom Thomson paintings, A Child's Garden of Verses, a Marconi rigged Sloop making passage, Las Vegas from the air at night, Robert Mapplethorpe's Self Portrait; 1988 (face with skull and cane), the Willy König 1980's twin turbo Porsche 911, MASH, A. A. Milne's Pooh books, The Princess Bride (book and movie), my pan roasted duck breast, and a whole lot of other things.
Resisted art: Most British comedy stuff. I really don't find it all the entertaining. Actually, most comedies leave me kinda cold. It was a real issue when I took a summer class about 'Humor in America' and really didn't find much of the stuff particularly entertaining.
Guilty pleasure: Trashy novels (Twilight and LKH come to mind, heh)
Sacred: You fuck with Millenium, I fuck with your face. (Same goes for a fair amount of Chris Carter's work, except for the later seasons of X-Files.)
Maybe we should start a Mecha The Wire club, and people can re-watch it from the beginning and Lori can watch it and we'll talk about it and it'll be a good time.
