First time oral surgery in the morning - what can I expect? [More:]

I will be having my last two tooths on the lower left side removed in the morning, 10am EST. I've had two wisdom teeths removed but never tooths that where broken at the gum-line.

So, what particulars to oral surgery procedures and especially recovery should I be looking forward to?
its not as bad as you fear, but it still sucks . you'll be gooned on the drugs for a bit and they'll give you more to take once they wear off. your mouth will be bloody for a few days and you'll have to do a lot of rinsing and gauze changing . its not that bad though . just dont smoke or use a straw to drink afterwards this could dislodge stuff and lead to a prob called dry socket which lasts for ages and is really annoying

Thanks roll. The dry socket info is very helpful. I'm off to bed now, early day ahead of me. I'll check back in the morning.

Drugs and discomfort.

I had maxilliofacial surgery when I was ten. I was put under general anesthesia and I vomited like crazy, after I woke up. I hope this does not happen to you, I have been put under for surgery since and never vomited like that again. I'm hoping it was because I was a child and not from the oral surgery. I've not had oral surgery *knock on wood* since then.

I also had six (I think) baby teeth pulled because they had monstro-roots on them and were inhibiting my permanent teeth. I had novocaine and nitrous oxide then but no vomiting. General discomfort, yes.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Yeah, what others said.

Be gentle with your mouth for a while. Gentle rinsing (don't suck and swish), soft foods (you'll get tired of yogurt), and avoid booze, smoking, sugar, carbonation, etc. Drink lots of warm water.

You'll be tired, too, so rest.

When I had oral surgery, the third day was the worst for pain. Not that it hurt that much more, but because I was so tired of the drugs and the ache. I took one of the "panic pills" they'd given me (big dose of codeine with tylenol) and floated for the rest of the day.

Hope all goes well!

To give you hope I had all of the wisdom teeth cut out of my head under general and I was eating normally again in about a week. One night of discomfort, but by day 2 I wasn't taking full on painkillers even.

* I do have a pretty high pain threshold though

I had general anesthesia for my wisdom teeth (the surgeon took out two). Woke up and walked out -- whatever anesthesia they were using wears off really fast.

Non-steriodals seemed to control the pain pretty well, and one can eat (carefully!) after a day or so, although the space left where the teeth were took a few weeks to fill in completely.

Thanks guys, one and all. This has all been helpful!

The appointment took only an hour. I wasn't put under after all. He did have a hell of a time getting one tooth out though, I actually became bored, that one tooth took so long!

The only real pain so far was from the Novocaine shots. After that it was just the sound of metal on tooth.

Bleeding is minimal. I've got pain killers. Am gonna haul off and take a nap. All in all, i think it wet swimmingly and not at all as scary as I thought it would be.
