What is this? [More:]Dear Metchat,

Hi. How are you? I am fine.

Yesterday I received this as a gift but cannot for the life of me figure out what it is.

Help?

Thanks!

Your friend,

Frisbee Girl
Hi Frisbee Girl!

It's a keychain, in the Tiffany's style.

Yeah, keychain. One (or both) of the balls on the tips of the horseshoe will unscrew to allow you to fit keys on.

(I don't think Tiffany & Co. even sells that style of keychain anymore. At least, I can't find it on their site.)

Oh bother, here it is.

Goodness, that was fast! Thanks!

I'd figured out that one ball screws off but that revelation didn't get me very far. Perhaps it's indicative of how long I've been in San Francisco, but a keychain was pretty much the last thing I thought this could have been.

I love Tiffany but their new "T&CO" logo has got to go. I always read it as "TACO."

I have to admit that I cringed when I clicked on that picture. And crossed my legs.

Pffft, you're all wrong. It's for a septum piercing!

Wait... that tiffanys keyring is $100??

Seriously?

Unless it is specifically to hold the keys to a giant vault filled with gold doubloons that seems a bit excessive.

Please tell me no one actually pays that kind of money for a keychain.

Plus tax/shipping!

Of course people buy solid silver keychains that cost $100! What else would you use to hold the keys to the new audi that you are giving your daughter on her sweet sixteen?

Folsom Street Fair is coming up in a few months. I recommend bringing the mystery object along and maybe doing some in-situ size & orientation checks (with permission, natch).

P.S. Hi Fris!!! Whuffles!

I had a parent give me one of those tiffany keyrings for a holiday gift when I taught at a spendy private school. It was odd, at best, to see a little blue box on my desk. I'd never gotten anything that fancy from anyone before, I don't think.

This post of mine from a couple months ago might be of vague interest.

No idea. But hi Fris!
