40th Birthday Party theme ideas! [More:]Starting to think about celebrating this big day in a month from now. It looks like a beach day + cookout sort of thing. Do you have any fun ideas to make the cookout more of an event?

Here's how far I've gotten:

1. I always swore that I'd go surfing in Hawaii for my 40th. Not happening...at least not any time soon. So, maybe either a 'Faux-Waiiian' theme or a 60s surf/Endless Summer kind of thing? What would I do for food for that one? Music is obvious enough and decoration takes care of itself, tiki torches, leis, etc.

2. No theme, just old-fashioned Summer Cookout.

3. My birthday is also National Book Lovers' Day. Ask everyone to bring a book they're done with, and swap.

4. Fiesta de Cuarenta! Margaritas, mariachi, tacos....

????

My birthday is also National Book Lovers' Day. Ask everyone to bring a book they're done with, and swap

I love this idea!

Invite all MeFiChazens in a 40 mile radius!

I was in the middle of getting divorced at 40, so I visited a friend in another state. Now I Run Away From Home for all birthdays ending in 0.

Ask people to bring 40 of something. Birthday cake candles, cupcakes, pennies, paperclips, whatever. It gives meaning to the number itself to see it represented.

That's a definite! (I know at least one other MeChazen also having a birthday that day....)

Oh, and I love the '40 of something' idea!

I also thought of asking people to write down their ideas for how to spend the next 40 years...

I love the Faux-waiian theme idea. I was just at the party store and they had tons of luau type items. You could easily stock up on leis, drink umbrellas and tiki torches. And building on theora55's idea of having everyone bring 40 of something, you could turn that into a white elephant swap .. you know, where everyone wraps their item, draws numbers and takes turns selecting one, opening it and then either keeping it or trading with someone. We have one of those parties a few weeks after Christmas every year and it's always a blast.

For food, if you really want to get all Polynesian, you could do a pig roast. Mai Tais for sure.

If we celebrate together, we could make it an 80th birthday party: your 40 + my 40 = 80.

For my 40th, I just bought a gas grill and invited everyone I know to a cook out. It helps that my birthday is on July 3 so that everyone has a long weekend but it did turn out to be a great party. Lots of beer was drunk and lots of chicken eaten.

I know, not much of a theme party but I've never been good at that kind of stuff.

My 40th was on Mardi Gras. I went to Key West instead of New Orleans, though, and spent my birthday night on an insane pub crawl along Duval Street that was led by a drag queen on stilts.

I have no regrets.

Man, BP, that's an awfully tempting idea. My 36 hours in KW a couple years ago were all too short...
