Chicago, Illinois, April 1977- "I knew what I was in for ten seconds after Guitar Player said to me: 'We want you to interview Led Zeppelin.' My head filled with the clarion call of screaming guitars and in a moment of epiphany I saw it all: Jimmy Page would be my touchstone. Every story I’d ever written or ever would write would be measured against this one."
Cool article BP. A glimpse into that rarefied air of the superstar. I like how he lived on their dime and with their groupies.

I know! The whole thing feels like something out of Almost Famous. Definitely a different world.

Fascinating -- but just reading it made me vaguely nervous, like he was going to discover that the tape recorder hadn't been working during the interview, or that Bonzo was going to pounce on him during the flight and kick his head in.

I've grown to appreciate Led Zep mightily over the years (after having dismissed them in knee-jerk "But Johnny Rotten hated them" fashion for a long time), but for me, everything about them gives off little electrical waves of danger and discontent.

scody, I can totally see where you're coming from, but probably being older than you I had a different view of the band. They were the bastions of rock and roll during the time when popular music was disco. Not that there's anything wrong with disco, but it's not ROCK! They just seemed honest about their music. Certainly it took bands like the Clash the Ramones to really bring it back, but Led Zeppelin really kept it going through that time. I think tension was what rock was at the time. Who knew we were at a precipitous time where we might find popular music decided by voting of fans in a response to a TV show... oh wait...

And, yeah, I can totally get the vibe that he screwed up the interview for other reasons than his writing. Tape recorder OFF. Tape ran by a magnet and destroyed. Etc.
