Making a Mix CD of Iconic American Pop Music For A Friend.... [More:]

I have a friend I'm campaigning with who's from Trinidad, and as such is curious about American pop music - wants to be hip, know his stuff, etc.

HOWEVER - he knows nothing. Has no idea who Fats Domino is or Simon and Garfunkel for that matter.

What seminal music should I include on a two-CD set of American rock to get him reasonably up-to-speed on American sounds?
The first CD should start with Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton.

Then it should have, uh, Louis Jordan, Bo Diddley and Little Richard.

I'd be a bit disappointed to receive an American Rock compilation that included Cat Stevens or Dire Straits.

(Though, that said, I'd be more disappointed to receive one with MC Hammer...)
