Only if you're training him to get underfoot.

If you gave yourself a cupcake everytime you stepped on the cat, well, that would be a different story!

As far as I can tell, cats don't get the cause-and-effect thing at all, so I think you're safe.

Every time I step on one of mine (which is often, because one in particular likes to bite my ankles at inappropriate times), he/she'll make that horrible OH MY GOD YOU'RE KILLING ME screech, run 10 feet away, and then give me that reproachful look. (You know the one.) And then I bend down and call the cat, and they'll be all like, "Oh hey, Mom's calling me!" and will run over and rub up against me.

I think it proves, if nothing else, that cats have very short memories.
