He got the buildings around the Capitol totally wrong, not even close. With all the work he put into those buildings, it seems like a pretty big detail to overlook. Perhaps he just repurposed stuff from another installation?
Wait--I guess that's supposed to be the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route? But then, he'd have to rotate the Capitol 180 degrees for that to be right.
I don't mean to nit-pick. I'm more confused as to why he'd spend so many hours getting the little details right and ignore the big ones.
Thanks for the info dhartung. The story makes it clear that the model was built before the inauguration, which explains why Aretha's hat is under-represented--there's no way they could have anticipated that beaut.
