Barksdale rats vs rats from Prop Joe's crew In fact, the Baltimore rat is so wedded to its home turf, typically an alley a few hundred feet long, that at the molecular level, an East Baltimore rat is distinct from a West Baltimore rat.
That paper sounds neat. I'd like to read it, but it's not in our library catalog (yet?).

I wonder if it's because of the inbreeding that they're different down to the DNA level. I've read a lot of rat breeders inbreed to keep certain traits in their rats. They'll inbreed several generations and the rats are as healthy as non-inbred rats. I find it fascinating that you can do that with rats yet other species are fucked up within a generation or two.
