Grizzly Bear "Veckatimest" I got this album this week, and it's my first exposure to the band Grizzly Bear. I like it okay, but it's disconcerting how much they sound like other bands. [More:]

Everybody and their brother has noted how much the first single, "Two Weeks" (I love this video, and yes it's why I bought the album) sounds like the Beach Boys, but there are a lot of other influences going on in this album.

Many, MANY times while listening to this album the vocals have reminded me of the band Low (if they used totally different arrangements), and many other times, of the band America (ugh).

There are a few places where they remind me of their contemporaries, like the Arcade Fire (but not as anthemic). There's a couple of Belle & Sebastian moments. Once or twice I was reminded of the Moody Blues.

For the most part these aren't bad bands to sound like (except for America- bleah), but I'm disappointed because I've heard so much about Grizzly Bear for several years now. They have some great moments, but overall they sound like a pastiche of other bands, with no real defining sound of their own.
crazy, I just got the album this afternoon too!

It's true that after a while all Indie bands start to sound the same. But this isn't their finest work. Yellow House was much better.

I just got this one this week, too, Beeps - and I'm still on the fence with it as well. The Beach Boys Sound (tm) is one that is way played-out right now in indie rock. Witness Grizzly Bear, Hot Panda, The Adventure Club, etc. etc.

Of course, on the flip side, the new Decemberists CD is all kinds of weird and wonderful - it sounds like Colin Meloy and Co. decided to go all-in on some great weed and mole up with the Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull for a year and change.

Actually, if the album sounded MORE like "Two Weeks," I'd probably love it. I'm just disappointed that they don't seem to have a sound of their own. I mean, it took me a while to warm up to the Arcade Fire, but they definitely sound more like themselves than they sound like anybody else. The Black Lips sound like almost all of the "Nuggets" bands, but they also sound exactly like the Black Lips. Like I said, after hearing this album I still have no idea what kind of band Grizzly Bear are.

This video for "The Knife" is a mind bender

Not their best song, but the video was weird enough I had to check out their catalog.

Crazy! MuddDude just bought this album after his friend raved about it all week. My opinion is pretty close to yours, BP, except I can't pinpoint their influences so well (I don't think I was alive when America was still recording albums...) A lot of the songs/vocals remind me of cheesy 80s new wave bands.

Some of it I like and some of it I don't. That's about all I can say.

Oh, nice, evilcupcakes. That video is like Dali meets Leone. Sweet.
