The Poppy Family- "Where Evil Grows." I love the 70s, those days when a wholesome-looking Canadian couple could have a hit with a groovy pop song about the nature of evil. [More:] After the breakup of the Poppy Family, the husband, Terry Jacks, released a career-defining single that truly WAS evil.
Versions prior to the recording by Terry Jacks with the original Jacques Brel translated lyrics and the cheating wife:

Kingston Trio - this one is really schizoid
The Fortunes - even gaggier than Jacks
Beach Boys

Admitting to knowing trivia like this is probably not the best idea. Oh well...

I thought the Beach Boys had declined to record it, and that's why Jacks sang and recorded it himself? Hmm. I guess they declined to release their version of it.

For those reading along, "Where Evil Grows" (linked in the post) is actually a GOOD song, unlike the one being discussed here.

I remember "Where Evil Grows" and I liked it, but it came and went so fast that I hadn't given it much thought since.

The Beach Boys version is unfinished. It is a rough mix and some overdubs were never recorded.

I counter with Janet Greene's Anti-Communism Folk Songs!

Also

The best adultery song.

If only cause she wrote it right after Mia Farrow broke up her marriage and all but names her directly. I love revenge songs.

(sidenote: I had a half-formed desire to upload all of Dory Previn's albums to You Tube, but lo! someone has done it for me! Would've made my Meta post meatier tho. Dang.)

Adultery songs? I can't find a good live version of Tom Jones, so instead THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND!!!

Also, "Dark Lady" is one of my favorite Cher songs.
