On top of the world, looking over the edge... I had a powerful dream last night.
→[More:] I was taking a vacation. On my way to the airport, we stopped due to a commotion in a parking lot. A young woman was climbing a tall communication tower. Folks were screaming at her not to jump, but she wouldn't heed them. Later, on vacation, I was witness to a second suicide by the same method. A woman climbed a tall structure, looked out over the world, and said good-bye.
Afterwards, the witnesses were called into a meeting. Nathan Fillion (I blame
xkcd) was saying that we had to do something about these suicides. They were organizing people to watch for jumpers, to patrol the towers. I'd been an observer for most of the dream, barely present at all (as one can be in dreams), but I felt the need to say something. I could barely find my voice, but I told the assembled crowd that I understood suicide. I said that sometimes, it comes from feeling powerless, or voiceless. I suggested that they talk to someone, and do so with an open mind. Find a relative stranger when your strange relatives are the problem. Just reach out, and make a connection. Then I lost my voice.
So, if you're out there and feeling alone right now, please reach out. And if you're not; if you're in a relative place of stability right now, reach out to someone who might not know they need it. Just a few kind words and a smile can make a difference.
