Variations on taking a photo of yourself every day? Need some ideas. [More:]

Been meaning to try and do that thing where you take a photo of yourself every day. Started a few days ago, already messed it up by missing two days. I don't think I'm going to continue now.

Are there similar projects/guidelines/things I can do? I'd like to take a photo every so often, but if it's every day I feel like as soon as I miss one my desire to continue is completely sapped.

Got any ideas for something I could do?
You mean like that person who took a picture every day and turned into a movie. Or do you mean one of those 365 day portrait projects?

Maybe you could do a Cindy Sherman (a bit nsfw) thing.

What about taking a photo of yourself every Sunday? If you don't work on Sundays, you're probably doing something interesting or different from the rest of the week, and having a photo record of your Sundays might be kind of neat.

I had originally meant to do the movie-type thing, but then I was like well how about just different portrait projects. Ended up doing kinda both for the few days I did it. I've heard about Cindy Sherman before and seen some of her work. I think that's an excellent idea for a non-time oriented project! I've always loved doing stuff like that, any excuse to dress up really, but never thought of really making a photo project of it.

Kangaroo, I think that's a great idea. I'd like to try it out.

But what do I take pictures of? Myself? Things? And if myself, do I just do a photo of my face, or do I try and set up a portrait? If a portrait, what kinds of things should I try? Or should I just not worry too much about form and just do whatever comes to me? :P

Go out somewhere interesting and ask someone to take your picture? I don't know if that would give off too much of a creepy tourist vibe though.

You should talk to rhapsodie. She did the 365 thing. I'm sure she'd have some pointers for you even if you don't want to do the every day thing.

Maybe rather than the "every day" thing, you could think about your sequence of self portraits and how the images will relate to each other sequentially. For example, over the course of, say 10 or 12 self portraits, try slowly to break into a smile. Or, starting from a a tightly closed mouth, gradually open it until you've got the biggest yawn you can manage. Or move from a sad expression to a happy one, gradually. I dunno, might be worth a try. And in the end it won't especially matter whether you've taken them every day or not. But It might be interesting to see you break into a smile wearing 12 different shirts, or with your hair in different states of disarray, whatever.

I did do the 365 Days thing, only missed one day when my dog died. Some days it was a big drag, some days it was like Oh Shit It's 11:45 And I Haven't Touched My Camera Yet, and some days I had a hell of a lot of fun - especially after I got into the strobist stuff. I joined the Flickr Group Roulette, a Flickr group that selects a different group to "invade" every day. It's basically a new theme every day. That really helped me through some creative slumps.

I found it really sad to give that project up, so now I'm doing a 52 Weeks thing: a self-portrait every Sunday. You don't have to do it the same day each week, but I've found Sundays I have the most time to devote to photography, so it doesn't end up a last-minute sort of shot. If you're interested in doing self-portraits, but don't want the ease of screwing up that 365 Days provides, you should try doing a 52 Weeks.

If you're not so keen on shooting yourself, what about 100 Strangers? I will fully admit to completely slacking on this project, but there's no time limit so I don't feel like I've failed.

Other Flickr photo projects I've been involved in sporadically: Project 365 (basically a shot per day of anything); Mission 24 (you have 24 hours to complete the shooting mission, but they aren't regular); Monthly Scavenger Hunt; Utata (a wider variety of themes/assignments, I tended to find them confusing, and the whole my-photos-on-their-site thing was weird).
