What they seem to be doing is jumping away from the tightly-regulated organisations that took government bailouts and into smaller firms that are still under the radar because they weren't perceived as part of the cause. "Banks paid out some $18 billion in bonuses last year, down 44 percent compared with a year earlier, and many workers viewed them as paltry payouts. " Must be nice to have a job where you can lose money and still get a bonus.
Anecdotal, but living in a suburb close to NYC the fallout is hurting people from all walks of life. A friend is a custom cabinet maker and orders are down better than 40% from 2008 (which was down from 2007). He has had to lay off two workers. The local bakery is not making the usual Easter & Passover cakes b/c the owner says business is way down, and he laid off a counterperson. Friends in the trades in NYC tell me of less work available. Teachers are being laid off in school districts where it once seemed jobs would be secure forever. Real harm has flowed from this disaster.
