There is so much hope, and yet despair in this photo that one scarecly knows where to begin.
The intimacy between this couple is undeniable, so tender, so peaceful. The viewer feels as if they perhaps are intruding?
But no. There can be no intrusion here, except for the presence of the Existential Other, for we see immediately that the one who is awake, has taken it upon himself to decorate his eyes.
Eye decoration regardless of species or culture carries with it an inner sadness, for the eyes are the windows of the soul. And when one chooses to adorn one's eyes in black, that can only mean despair.
Something has happened between these two, something perhaps recent, perhaps not, that has colored their joy. And that something is now keeping one of them awake, and haunted.
It only takes but a moment's glance to realize the hidden depth, the brave scars. The audacious use of white bunnies by the artist, besmirched with eyes of black!
So much to account for here, are we even aware of the sexual status of this couple? Transgression is possible here. With the black-eyed bunnies, we know we are on unforeseen terms.
What does the portrait here tell us of our sexual politics, of those things we have seen, and can no longer un-see? Of wounds delivered or received that haunt us in the hours chosen for sleep?
This bunny cannot rest, and neither can the viewer - as the sins of the past know no slumber.
