I think I know a little bit about s'mores (though I've never tasted one) because I spend quite a lot of time on Metachat... but can someone enlighten me (and gomichild) as to what peeps are and what they taste like? I saw the pictures in the link, but that didn't help.
They're gooshy but fairly tasteless marshmallows shaped into the forms of helpless-looking little animals (originally yellow chicks, hence "Peeps") and covered in fine sugar which adds a crunchy texture. I think they have additional flavors now, but the originals are just pure fluffy sweetness.
Deceptive sweetness, as they will likely survive the apocalypse (I'm sure it has been posted ad nauseum, but no description of them would be complete without it).
Peeps are disgusting. They are marshmallow 'treats' (and I would use that word with caution) shaped like chickens or bunnies, made out of marshmallow-type stuff, and with a sugary coating. I have only ever tried one. That was more than enough. They are nothing - nothing - like nice normal fluffy, sweet and delicious marshmallows.
The nearest thing I can describe them to is that it's like eating a mouthful of shaving foam covered in grit, that leaves a coating on the inside of your mouth that no amount of tooth-brushing or mouthwash will get rid of.
Oh, man, we love roasting Peeps over a camp fire--the sugar coating hardens into a creme-brulee-like topping. We've already stocked up for our summer camping trips.
This is added to my list of things that can't suck. Excellent! This is a use for Peeps that I think would actually be delicious. I adore Peeps for their visual appearance, but never cared for them as a confection. Add chocolate and grahams, though... mmm.
And mrmoonpie, I will also steal your Pepps campfire idea.
