Ask MeCha re photobucket A client has been questioned by the feds about pictures purportedly downloaded from Photobucket. He says he thinks he never uploaded pictures to Photobucket, but maybe MySpace. Does Photobucket suck in pictures from other sites?
Yes. When a user uploads to Photobucket, they can either pick a file that's on their own computer, or enter the URL of an image on the web and it'll download directly from that site.

Feds? Whoha. Was it pictures from the grassy knoll?

just like BoringPostcards says, photobucket can suck pics from other sites. I have no idea how photobucket can do this legally but IANAL.

I'm not sure from your language exactly what your client did (or is alleged to have done, or something--IANAL), but lots and lots of Internet photos are hosted on Photobucket (even ones here on Mecha), and almost all browsers cache images automatically. Unless you're browsing with images off, you've probably downloaded something from Photobucket.

dabitch: could definitely be wrong, but my impression is that they're kinda like Youtube, presuming users have the rights to images, but removing things immediately if somebody complains.
