Askmecha: Hot 70's Soul? [More:]

I'm covering a 70's-only R&B, Funk, and Soul show for the next two weeks at the station. That's the good news.

The bad news is I don't really know any outside of the usual suspects: P-funk, James Brown, Donny Hathaway, etc.

I'm hoping the Mechaverse can turn me on to some other artists to fill this show out with and not bore people to death with a 70's Soul version of Classic rock.

Sly & The Family Stone, Ohio Players, Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose, Bootsy's Rubber Band, Curtis Mayfield, The Isley Brothers, Confunkshun, Billy Preston, Tower of Power, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Kendricks, Bobby Womack, JJ Johnson, Rose Royce, Lou Donaldson, Boogaloo Joe Jones...

Man, I could go on all day. Freda Payne, Esther Phillips, Roberta Flack, Bobbi Humphrey, The Blackbyrds, Earth Wind and Fire, the Ohio Players, Barry White/Love Unlimited Orchestra, Ike Hayes...

I just had two brainstorms. The first is that I'm not really sure how far the usual suspects extend. The second, more interesting, is that one good way to avoid the classic-rock thing might be to simply play deep cuts. Don't play Donny Hathaway's version of 'Jealous Guy'--play his smoking 12-minute live version of 'The Ghetto.' Don't play Freda Payne's 'Band of Gold'--play 'Unhooked Generation.' You see where I'm going with this.

But please do play "Every 1's a Winner" as well, OK?

A little obvious, but I'll put in a plug for Isaac Hayes' Walk On By.

Tom Browne - Funkin' for Jamaica. Awesomest funk track ever.

The Jones Girls - Nights over Egypt

Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove

I adore the What It Is box set... Nary a bad track in it. Even if you don't use those songs specifically, you could definitely use the names on the tracklist to find some terrific stuff.

Also. For pete's sake, check out Soul Sides.

Indeed.

Holy crap, pokermonk- that box set looks amazing. WHY are you posting this when I'm trying to curtail my spending? WHY?

No one said Marvin Gaye yet? You can play a whole side of What's Goin' On and not go wrong.

I'm trying to avoid the bigger names here, like your Marvin Gayes and your Curtis Mayfields, simply because the DJ I'm replacing is far deeper than that, and I feel obligated to come up with something original or interesting.

Economic recovery?

This is small so that you don't necessarily have to read it: seriously, there is nothing about it that is not awesome.
