I only clicked the first link, and I still haven't recovered. Yeesh.

BBC America did a show on this a few weeks back. Here's the link. It's creepy and very sad and at the same time.

Can we just stop the new "fake people doll" meme here and on Metafilter now? Please, dear sweet Lord, please?

LT: Don't look.
Here's the clip I was looking for.

Yeah, the fake doll thing is creepy enough. But these things were so hideous I thought they just had to be fake, but I've found no evidence that they're not genuine.

I mean, did you see some of those contest winners?

Yeah, this made me feel like crying.

But I don't say that to make anyone feel bad, that was just my reaction. Could be the weather.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. On one hand it takes a lot of skill to get get a vinyl doll to look that real (and yes, some of them do look very realistic even if ugly). On the other hand, the women (and a few men) who treat them like real infants are a rather sad lot. Yet, if it makes them happy, who am I to judge what's sad or not.

Like I said, mixed feelings.

Are these the offspring of lonely men and Real Dolls?

On the third hand, if doing this fulfills something deep inside of these men and women, and keeps even one of them from going off the deep end and and, say stealing a baby from the maternity ward then I'm cool with it.

Creepy? sure. Harmful? no, I don't think so.

I have to admit, I admire the skill to make the skin mottled, as real newborn skin is. The winners (well, most of them) are amazing in their detail. Eyelashes, eyebrows...I can't imagine the time it took to make these.

This color is also great for stork bites.

WTF??

these are creepy - yet I can't look away.

jonathanstrange - a stork bite is a reddish mark like a birthmark, common in newborn babies. They usually fade.
