I find most New York-style bagels unappetizing. The ones at The Bagel Zone were good, but alas, I fear the Zone is going, going, gone. I've taken scorn for preferring bready bagels; to anyone who wants to give me grief or tell me I've obviously never had a real bagel, I prefer mine with tuna salad, and a large coffee, dark and sweet, thanks.
Onion, toasted with plain cream cheese. My last job we got bagels every Friday morning but I haven't had one since the Fall. We should go out Saturday for bagels.
Although I usually have to say "cream cheese and lox" so they don't think I'm saying "lots of cream cheese." Why "lox" is an unknown term in a freakin' self-styled New York-type bagel place (Noah's) is a mystery to me. And don't get me started on sometimes having to say "dark rye" instead of "pumpernickel."
Part of the problem is that if you want cream cheese and lox at Noah's, you have to order a lox sandwich and have them leave all the other crap off.
Onion bagel, light toasted with onion cream cheese.
And now that y'all have made me hungry for bagels, I'm going to have an everything bagel (the only kind we have) toasted with butter and cheese on top. Once the cheese is on top it goes back into the toaster oven to melt it a bit.
tomato pesto bagel with butter AND plain cream cheese, or with garlic cream cheese
I get mine from a place called Bagel Jay's. The owner used to be partial owner of a local chain called Bagel Brothers (which was my first job), and got sold to chain Manhattan Bagel (which is dramatically inferior.)
In fact, I have a sack of them in the kitchen now, calling my name...
Dark toasted onion bagel, fat-free cream cheese, lots of capers (pushed into the cream cheese), a single ring of red onion (also pushed into the cream cheese), thick slices of smoked salmon, cracked black pepper. Lox will do as well, but I prefer eating lox by itself. I must make these myself as no one in Fresno seems to understand a) that lox and smoked salmon are different, and b) lox is not salmon flavored cream cheese.
A sesame bagel with butter, cream cheese, and strawberry jam. I'm making homemade bagels this week; we can't get real bagels in my town, or if you can, I don't know where.
