Do you ever use your municipality's GIS maps? [More:]
They're just so helpful!

This afternoon I pulled up crime data from the last year for a half-mile radius around three different addresses. I used my current address, one in a neighborhood I'm considering moving into and one in a "bad*" neighborhood.

A little data crunching and I determined that current neighborhood and possible future neighborhood had about the same level of crime. Compared the the *bad neighborhood, these other two are just pillowy-soft, heavenly and safe.

*supposed to be dangerous but isn't quite gang territory.
I'm not if my city publishes that data and where I'd find it. It would be interesting though.

Yeah, different places have different levels of data you can see. Go to your local government's website and see if they do anything with GIS data. Fun to play around with.

I used to use all the cities' GISs on a daily basis when I was gainfully employed. The most common task I had was to investigate the development potential of properties that project managers needed to draw plans for. Oregon seems to have a generally high level of GIS data quality and accessibility, probably something to do with our unique land use system.
