I'm a Calif native and I had never heard of an avocado pie before. But, my dad grew up in Fall River MA and he loves those dried chow mein noodles; he brings home a suitcase full every time he visits. They are indeed great in a sandwich.
I love spam sushi. I made a batch a couple summers ago for a tiki themed party and it's been a regular summer dish since then. Everyone was nervous to try it, but once they did it disappeared quickly.
Oh, and having grown up in Colorado and Wyoming, I can say that the only people who ever eat Rocky Mountain oysters are tourists. Victually no one eats them regularly.
PA native Dad did eat scrapple sometimes (shudder). Something I do love, a PA thing, is Lebanon Baloney. Hard to find around here, but if I do, I jump on it.
And pepperoni rolls are totally a normal food. Like stromboli bites, kinda. Pizza type family. What's not to like?
Whether intentional or not, I think that's my favorite misspelling ever.
I'd never heard of avocado pie, either, so it sounds like we've ruled out a pretty good portion of the state. I think someone served one to the writer once as a joke, so it got written into history.
Because I'm hosting a sandwich party this weekend, I bought a jar of Fluff to make a Fluffernutter. I ate thousands of these in my childhood, but have not had one for... oh, I'm guessing it's been two decades, or likely more.
I'm another California native (southern) and I've never heard of avocado pie. The only thing on that list I'd eat is the pepperoni rolls and I like avocado.
Truth: A lot of Alaskan Natives that have moved to the city can no longer acquire the blubber necessary for Eskimo Ice Cream. So they use Crisco. It's awful, awful stuff.
But not nearly as awful as the custom of burying a seal flipper for months, until it becomes so gelatinous that you can pull the bones right from it. That's how you know it's done.
Scrapple is actually pretty tasty.
My boyfriend grew up in Philly, and he convinced me to try scrapple. It is one of the most un-tastiest things I have ever eaten.
