OMG Kitty!!1!! The Spousal Unit and I were hiking on Tiger Mountain when she spotted the paw print in the mud. Very, very, very fresh.
[More:]Sorry the pic is a bit blurred (blackberry camera and yes I should have taken several) but you get the idea. The house keys give an idea of scale. The print was about the size of my hand. Definitely a cougar.

It was raining but this spot was under a tree so the print had good detail. FYI, my boots did not sink into the mud nearly as far. On a dry day we might not have seen it at all.

I followed the tracks a few feet down the mountain, which was where we had just come from.

For all our outdoorsy friends here, this is why walking quietly in the wilderness is a bad idea. You might end up getting to know a predator in ways that don't often end well.
Gah, duh. I forgot to mention that this was about two hours ago.

WOW! Exhilarating! What a wonderful little gift you got today.

It's funny you should mention quiet hiking. When I'm in the woods I make very little to no noise without even trying. I've come upon many animals - porcupines, skunks, even a dear or two - and I wind up being looking at as if they are saying, "What? What are you looking at?"

I'm glad there are no big cats in my area. Black bear are scary enough.

Wow, that is so neat. The beach ranger told us she saw a Florida Panther a few weeks ago. I'm very skeptical but maybe she did.
