Resumes Post your list of jobs here. I think we did this once before but it was a long long time ago and it's always interesting to see the weird jobs people have had. [More:]
I have been, roughly chronologically:
* babysitter
* countergirl at a deli

Throughout my life, I have also volunteered extensively, and of course, for the past eighteen years I have had the great pleasure and agony of being a mother.

Most jobs have been concurrent where I have worked at least two at the same time. I am still part-time at the urban public library reference branch and I am starting to think I may be here long-term (by far it is the best, and best-paying, job I have had). I also can't seem to lose these darn kids - I don't know where they keep popping out of! I can tell I am getting old because I am now suddenly aware that I can retire in less than twenty years. Wow, that is incredible to me.

posted by geekyguy 24 March | 09:45
Chronologically:

- Photo lab clerk/camera-store salesperson
- Telemarketer (for one day... couldn't hack it)
- Cashier supervisor at a drugstore
... Pharmacy technician at the same chain
- Phone-book deliverer
- Produce clerk at historic market (for only one day... I never figured out why they didn't keep me.)
- Seasonal Wal-Mart floor "associate" (Pets, plants & seasonal!)
- Seasonal gift-shop clerk in tourist trap
... Seasonal movie-theatre clerk in aforementioned tourist trap (I made $5.50/hour but I swear this might have been my best job ever. Total solitude, fall weather and little responsibility beyond rewinding and re-starting a videotape about the site.)
- Seasonal Wal-Mart cashier/customer-service-desk clerk

- Real-estate agency receptionist
- Large-scale photo lab Quality Assurance inspector (same company that I worked for on the retail level back in high school)

- Data-entry-company clerk (organized/prioritized the stuff for the data-entry people to enter)
- Office clerk in non-profit agency working with people in conflict with the law (or at risk) and their families
- Assistant marketing coordinator at a restaurant-marketing firm (basically I was the person who harasses you after you fill out a restaurant feedback card)
- Receptionist at a university faculty office
... Promoted to Assistant to the directors of two different departments (job description is complex but involved purchasing, payroll and HR aspects on top of mundane admin stuff and department communications [Website, calendar copy, policies...].) It was made into two full-time jobs after I left.
- Music writer
- Office temp (quit my secure union job to do this and it was incredibly liberating)
- Scriptwriter (well, technically scénariste) at a video-game company

I've also run a Web community since 2002. We have about 14,000 members I think. But that's a voluntary thing and the site is non-profit (no ads, member-supported).

Oh, crap. I forgot...

- Before paintball factory, I worked in the same photo lab in the digital alterations-and-restorations shop

posted by loiseau 24 March | 11:32
Oh CRAP! I can't believe I forgot THIS! I was just thinking about it before I sat down at my computer, too.

My second job was:

- Naval reservist. Technically, an "Ordinary Seaman". Snicker if you must. I was a basic-training dropout.

(I find this my most interesting one, because it's so random and SO UNLIKE ME. But I think discipline, though dreadful, is something I intuitively know I need, and also, I liked the uniforms. It was a fascinating experience that I'm crazy glad I'll never have again. I have tonnes of memories and stories.

I only signed on after I'd ascertained that the only way I'd ever be forced into combat is if someone attacked Canada's shores. I believe that to be pretty unlikely.)
posted by loiseau 24 March | 11:44
I, too, fear, and crave, discipline.

A couple addenda for my list: between "cultural ambassador" and "stock boy" should be "graphic designer" and "failed entrepreneur."
