20 March 2009

so who's home sick today? not homesick, at home while sick.[More:]Woke up with a horrid sore throat, sneezing and congestion, went to the doctor hoping it was bacterial so I could get some antibiotics and get over it. Unfortunately it's the flu so I just have to ride it out. She suggested Claritin-D - first time I've ever bought the stuff behind the counter. They took my driver's license and made me sign something promising not to build a meth lab in my basement. I'm surprised they didn't fingerprint me too.

Anyway my day will be split between sleeping and watching stuff on Hulu.
Me. Still off with this gastric upset. I called the GPs earlier for my test results but they're not back yet. I'll have to wait until next week, but in the meantime I'll be back at work on Monday.

I've been sleeping a lot, watching a lot TV and spending too much time on the computer. I have no concentration for reading.

I've lost 12lbs since last Friday.

Why in the world would a doctor suggest an antihistamine for the flu?

mudpuppie - for congestion I guess? I haven't taken any yet - took some Theraflu and that has helped my sore throat a lot.

SO has been home all week with what he believes to have been the flu.

*raises hand* I've been sick since Tuesday. I was feeling better yesterday, but it didn't last. It also wasn't a good idea to go out the first day I was feeling better. I can be such a fool sometimes.

It really pisses me off when sick people do not stay home from work. The guy in the cube next to mine has been coughing for two weeks. The virus has spread through my department like an epidemic. Out of ~40 people, at least half have gotten this thing.

I started getting sick last night. I have a fever, very sore throat, especially on the left side, weakness and body aches. I did have to open this morning at 6. We are stretched very thin and there was no way to avoid work. I didn't work directly with patients and kept using this hand foam we have. I went home at noon. This afternoon I slept from 12:30pm to now. I am one sick pup. I had to cancel movies for tonight. My lovely sister brought my kids to the movies after school so I could sleep.

I never have a fever. This is really cramping my style.

Been in bed most of the day, sick as a dog with blocked sinuses and feeling head-coldy. Even worse, it's Saturday, so I don't get to miss a day of work.

Same exact thing I have. Try Theraflu Cold & Sore Throat - it is the shiznit. Also Mucinex DM if you have any congestion.

I know you work in healthcare and I don't, I'm just telling you what's worked for me since we have the same thing.

I'll buy some today, desjardins. Thanks. I'm wondering if I could have strep throat. I haven't had it in the past but it was going around at school. Whatever it is, it sucks. Did I mention that I have this annoying headache as well? Ugh. I can barely walk around, I'm so weak.

I thought it was strep, too, so I went to the urgent care and got tested but it was negative.

We got scarlet fever in the house. She woke up fine, then complained that she wasn't feeling well and did not want to go to grandmas (wait, what? oh dear, the girl is sick!) so I checked her temperature (a whopping 39.4 C) and asked her to show me her toungue, it was white with small dots popping up. Scarlet fever! I declared - or Streptococcus pyogenes - and called the nurses office to ask whether we should come in because I hear people take antibiotics for that sort of thing. She said yes, and we carry an increasingly worse for wear three year old to the emergency office. The nurse that looks at her gives us painkillers to take the fever down, and we are told that we can take a walk for an hour before the doctor has time to see us. Ten minutes later that aspirin-stuff kicks in and the former puddle of a girl that sloppily hung on to me is now running down the street all exited because I've said that anyone with strep gets to eat ice-cream all day. An ice-cream and a walk around the block later she's bright eyed waiting for the doctor in a small room, asking me what each item is and what the doctor will do. I explain everything twenty times over, making this a field trip.

The doctor arrives, I explain what the now perfectly healthy looking child has been complaining about - headache tummy ache, sore throat - and what we can see - fever and "strawberry tongue". Doc checks her out and is not impressed with the tongue, thinking that's nothing at all, and besides the kid is perky as hell "just look at her". Dad says that the kid is tougher than nails, I tell Doc that the whole aspirin, ice-cream and interesting doctors office usually does have this effect on her, she's too interested in what is going on it takes her mind off pains. Doc sends us to run tests, still doubting. Test comes back, and doc turns to me "sorry, I really didn't think that was a strawberry tongue it was so little, but you're right, she's got scarlet fever". Mom diagnosis wins!

So we've picked up the antibiotics and had some more ice-cream. Now she's crashed hard as the aspirin wore off and she became a little puddle of fever-poor-little-me-mommy-I-need-hugs again. Now her tongue is the bright scarlet red with the little dots on it, they start out quite white, the doctor had probably never seen it at an early stage like that before.
