I am undertaking stealth ointment application. The cat is having an allergic reaction that has caused her to lick or bite off large patches of fur. [More:] I have a hippie-granola all-natural first-aid salve that seems to be soothing the skin and helping it heal, but the cat freaks out when I come anywhere near her for the purpose of applying it.

So I've been reduced to waiting until she is asleep on my lap, geeeeeeeeeentlllly reaching over and picking up the ointment, and sloooooooowly picking up her limbs one by one to reach the bitten bits, and caaaaarefully smearing ointment on them. Except that she usually wakes up halfway through, so then I have to pretend that there's nothing on my finger, really, and I was just playing with your foot, ha ha!, ok I'll put it down now. And wait until she falls asleep. And then start the whole thing over.

It's a good thing cats sleep so damned much.
Been going through something similar with Whitey Ford. I wish you well.

Gah, stuff like that is so frustrating. And don't you wish you could tell them that you're doing it for their own good?

My orange guy had this - turned out to be mites. The vet gave me an antiparasitic (Revolution) and he'd stopped the obsessive licking by the next day.

Stealth Ointment would be a great band name. I'm just saying.

Are you using Bag Balm? My mother had jars of that stuff all over the house, but mostly used it on the chickens when they got hurt to keep the other chickens from pecking at the sores. The smell of that square tin reminds me of my childhood.

I'm pretty sure she had flea bites, which she's allergic to, so she's on flea medications, too (though neither I nor the vet could find any evidence of any fleas on the cat). But the steroid cream stuff the vet gave me didn't seem to be working all that well, plus I figured it's not great for her immune system. So this weekend she got an anti-itch shampoo (which she loved, lemme tell you... sigh) and now it's the herbal stuff twice a day, which seems to be helping more.

And don't you wish you could tell them that you're doing it for their own good?

I know. I hate the look she gives me when I yell at her to stop licking herself.

rhapsodie, I'm using Herbal Ed's Salve, mainly because I already had it around. That Bag Balm looks great, though.

I found a flea last night and have had the sensation of bugs crawling in my hair all morning.
