Whuffles please! I am worried about getting my rabbit neutered tomorrow. [More:]So I have an appointment for 10 am to get The Senator snipped, and I'm really worried! I'm thinking this is the wrong decision and too big of a risk for the payoff.

He's almost 4 yr old (middle aged for his breed) and recently has been really annoying at night- humping my arms, digging in the bed, waking me up. A few weeks ago he "marked his territory" on bf's side of the bed one night when bf wasn't over. So I thought that neutering would curb these things and make Senator more pleasant to live with.
But of course since I've made the appointment, he's been so much better on all counts.

Here's what I am worried about:
1. He won't wake up/something will go wrong in surgery
2. He'll wake up but his personality will be different
3. He'll stop eating because of the pain and then I'll have to force feed him or go through the awful times of 2 summers ago when that happened
4. He will resent me/be more distant
5. There won't be any behavioral change and I'll just have put him through trauma for nothing (and be out $250)

I'd appreciate some reassurance!

I was sad when I handed over my puppy to be spayed. She was my little baby and I was worried about her. My biggest concern was that she would be in pain and that she was going to be in a strange place for a while. My worries didn't last long. I knew I was doing the right thing and it had to be done.

I wouldn't think his personality would change. I don't know much about rabbits but I think your little bunny is going to be fine. I know it's difficult to hand over a beloved pet but it sounds like you're doing the right thing. It will be over before you know it and the Senator will be home with you again.

I felt scared when I had my Kitty neutered. It's natural to fear surgery for surgery is unnatural. Yes a bad thing could happen but most of the time it does not. It's the best decision to make under the circumstances and Kitty was just fine. Other than a temporary loss of dignity. He real hated having the small bald spot for a bit.

But wow $250? I guess rabbits are a lot more expensive than cats.

arse_hat: yeah I thought that was high. Maybe I'll ask them about it... How much was your cat's? (Of course, everything in NY is ridiculous, so I wouldn't be surprised if they doubled the price for a snip.)

General exam, tests for worms and Feline Leukemia, full panel of shots, and neutering came out to a little less than $170 with taxes in. Yeah the NY premium may account for it. :(

Kiss the Senator for me! I'm sure he'll come through just fine, he's a pimp!

We had our Alice spayed almost a month ago, and she recovered very quickly. However, it cost closer to $400. Our main rationale is that female buns tend to be susceptible to ovarian cancer if they're not fixed, so we did it mainly out of concern for her health. She's doing just fine now, and doesn't seem to bear us any ill will.

Thanks guys, we're off! (After many kisses and breakfast of cilantro and yoghurt treats.)

Thanks everyone, we are home safe and one of us is hiding under the dresser and looking really stoned. I won't say who.
They put some moisturizer or something in his eyes, and his face hair is now all spiky and weird looking. I'll try to get a picture later if he comes out!
