15 March 2009

Up and at 'em! Let's motivate each other to get shit done that we don't wanna do. [More:]

It's cold and rainy out, and if I don't watch myself, I'll lie in bed all day on the computer. Instead, I'm going to publicly pledge to do at least the following:

1) Put away clean laundry
2) Change the sheets.
3) Straighten up the bedroom.
4) Clean the bathroom

Ideally, I will also:
5) Do my taxes.
6) Set my bills up again to autopay with my new credit card.
7) Settle bills.

OK. I'll check back in an hour.

If you have anything you need to get done, I'll be here to cheer you on!
I just want to get through the day without spending too much of it in the bathroom. I have gastroenteritis.

I think that qualifies as "shit you don't wanna do," jan.

As for me, I've managed to wake up my light-sleeping roommate and cause a fuss. We have to now negotiate what a reasonable time is for me to do things in the shared areas. We have very different morning sleep schedules, and she's a very light sleeper. Her first bid is 10 a.m., which she says is a compromise for her. My problem is that she wakes up even though I'm tiptoeing around doing my best to make no noise. I don't want to be tied to my bedroom for three hours after I wake up. That's my most productive time. We'll have to talk about the specifics of what I would be allowed to do with impunity. I can't even make breakfast without waking her up. Argh!

Buy her some earplugs. She'll get used to them quickly, and she'll sleep better through the whole night. She will also need an alarm clock that has a plug for a lamp.

As for what I must do, finishing this cup of coffee is paramount. Then I must find my 'to do' list. I haven't seen it at all these last 10 days. I imagine I will wander myopically from one pile to the next for an hour.

Get well soon, jan. I feel for you.

My house is a hole and I have many loads of laundry. I'm meeting a friend at the beach at noon so it will have to remain a hole until tomorrow.

Oh, man! This is definitely a query for future roommates. I would be really hogtied by this; I'm often up at 5 am, and feeling totally psyched to wash clothes, dishes, etc. Thank goodness my husband is a persistent sleeper - and also perfectly cool with me taking afternoon naps. I'm always up-and-at-em in the morning, and ridiculously lazy after noon.

Today I have to keep my two-year-old entertained and engaged without resorting to the television except for half an hour late in the day when he's cranky and tired but it's too early for bed. That was a long sentence. We're on our own this weekend as hubby is in Mexico City for work. At least it's going to be nice out - 54 and sunny - so we'll go to the park and take walks and explore the back yard. I miss having a whole day to do whatever I want.

OK. So far I have:
put away 2/3 of the clothes
washed sheets, duvet cover, mattress pad

Blackcurrant-flavoured Dioralyte does not taste of blackcurrants. It tastes of salt. Lying bastards.

I've been lying on the sofa watching The Office (US version). I had been invited out for lunch today but obviously can't go. Not that I'm all that upset about it, the friend who invited me, whilst a dear friend, is a terrible cook. Paradoxically, given my first paragraph above, the problem with her food is that she doesn't use salt in anything.

Hugs to you, dear jan. Keep drinking fluids...
posted by Stewriffic 15 March | 10:53
I drank my coffee, shaved and showered, and I did all that in just over 3 hours. I consider that a good start and possibly grounds for a nap, especially with the rain.

My list (and I actually wrote one out when I got up this morning [at 8!]) is as follows:

Laundry
Compost
Clean fridge
Mow
Clean bathroom
Dishes
Cat litter
Drop check at city offices

I should get started on that stuff now, except that it may or may not rain this morning, and it's not raining now, so I think I'll head over to the garden and finish weeding so that I can plant beets, radishes, carrots, and more arugula. And then when I come back, if I'm not to beat (did four hours of weeding yesterday, so I'm already a little sore), I'll get started on the indoor stuff.

Oh, and this evening I must to make the white bean soup.

Up and at 'em! Well, it's 4.30 and I haven't done the work I need to get done. However, it shouldn't take long, and I hereby publicly pledge that I will finish it in the next hour and a half.

After that, I need to clean the house somewhat (I'll set the bar low for this task) and make dinner. Plenty of good TV on this evening.

Get well soon, ej, poor thing.

Aw, feel better soon, essexjan.

I have to do some work, but that will be tonight, after the baby goes to bed. Today my only goals are

- reply to a couple of emails (done)
- make baby food (done)
- scrub bath (sigh, not done)

I have a big list:

1. Dishes (done while making coffee, but I wanted to include them anyway so I have one checked off)

2. I did laundry last night, but I need to do more.

3. Recycling/check mail (have to lug the empty bottles down the block to the mailboxes to recycle them and I tend to get bad news in the mail a lot, so I put off checking it)

4. Look for jobs

5. Go to Kinko's to fax transcripts and scan stuff in order to apply for jobs

6. Get nails done

7. Groceries

I need to go to church and then the gym, haven't been to the gym in well over a week. And I really don't want to go to either this morning, mostly because it means I have to put on pants.

I also need to make a food list for the week, go grocery shopping, do some fancy photography-ing, and would like to get the poop scooped in the back yard while it's still mostly frozen, before everything gets melty and soupy. Maybe take Olive to the park.

I ran into an obstacle when attempting to fill the dishwasher: it needed emptying. I persevered, emptying and refilling it No children were injured but I believe the extra activity may have traumatized the neighbor's cat. This calls for irish coffee.

I need to prepare my presentation for class next week, continue to avoid freaking out about not hearing from UMD (they told everyone to quit bugging them about decisions until the end of the week), continue to avoid thinking about the bank accepting the offer for the condo, and I really need to plan out my next steps on all the work projects that I've got going on because I need to get at least one of those finished very soon because I haven't had any deliverables yet this year.

I went to see a house; it was located just behind a rent-by-the-hour scary motel. Otherwise, it was beautiful.

Had a convo with the housemate that did not go too well. I ended up very angry. Argh.

I made s'mores over the gas range. Maybe that will help.

Except for a tic in the left ear, the cat now appears normal.
posted by Ardiril 15 March | 13:36
So far today, I have drunk a pot of coffee, eaten cold leftover Pizza, pestered the cats, read the Sunday Post-Gazette and played Civ IV. A pretty productive Sunday, I would say.

I am soo procrastinating -- MetaChat, FB, FB chat, FB scrabble, coffee, making a list of little items for my fantasy next life as a creative writer, etc., etc. I am supposed to be doing work for my actual job.

I cleaned my room and the litterbox, then stalled. I have to clean the rest of the house. Could someone come over with a bullhorn and a whip? I think it's the only way.

Sort of like my ideal personal trainer/running coach: somebody with a big knife chasing me making scary OM NOM NOM noises. That's pretty much the only way you're going to get me running. If he could come over now and threaten me with death if I don't clean the bathroom and the kitchen, that would really help.

I'm finally off to Home Depot for 2x4s, steel bracing and a bucket of roofing tar.
posted by octothorpe 15 March | 14:32
I hear ya, MGL. That's exactly what I need, too.
posted by Stewriffic 15 March | 14:33
So far I have cleaned the kitchen, done laundry, found two new jobs to apply for, done everything to apply for a job that closes on Monday except scan stuff and attach it to my already-written email, and cleaned the litterbox. I never get this much done by noon on a Sunday, so thanks for the encouragement, folks.
posted by Twiggy 15 March | 14:41
Did everything on my list except the recycling and the groceries. I'm calling it a day.

I did manage to pick up what I needed at HD. Next week it's up on the garage roof to start tarring the seams where the rain's been coming through. I got up there to clear out the drains yesterday so that should help but the seams where the rolls of tar paper meet are all open. I've got all my books stored in the garage and so far the leaks have only been on one side of the roof but I'm terrified that it's going to start leaking on the side with the books. Since my layoff in the winter, we can't afford to have a professional job done this year so it's me and a bucket of tar and a trowel.
