15 March 2009

Another one bites the dust I have joined the list of bunnies who've been let go during the GFC.[More:]

Great welcome back from my holiday, and it kind of makes my whining about wanting another week off look a little ironic.
Agh, that sucks! sorry! I send hugs, let me know please if I can do anything more useful.

Thanks Grace. It was pretty unexpected, so I'm in shock at the moment.

Gosh I'm so sorry to hear that. It is an awful thing to come home to. That really stinks. Sending good thoughts and hope for better days your way ...

Enough! Yikes! I'm so sorry.

This is quite a tsunami...keep your chin up, hang out here. remember you will survive. The shock wears off. Don't try to think about things too far ahead - it's stressful. One thing at a time, and take care of yourself.

One of the best things I did right off the bat was update my resume and send it out to every friend and network contact I have, with a cover letter saying I was in the job market and to please forward my resume. The response was really heartwarming and supportive and some good (and surprising) leads come from it. So lean on your community! Good luck in the coming days.

Ouch!

If you feel like moving to a warmer climate, there are some jobs going in my team ...

Thanks everyone. I'm doing ok, but still in shock. I cleared out my desk this morning, and left pretty much immediately. I'll get 2 weeks pay, along with the leave that I was owed.

Will begin the job hunt tomorrow. Have an appointment with a counsellor on wednesday, and might see if I can go to one of the careers advisors at uni. I'm glad I still have my student privileges. It should help in terms of employment services and so forth. I'll also sign up to lots of agencies, and see if that helps.

Gah. This was NOT what I was expecting when I woke up this morning.

JS, I want to say I'm sorry, but everyone else has already said that. So instead I present you with this fantasy tidbit. Imagine yourself living in the lap of luxury ... in the MeCha Mansion.

See, I think now that we're all jobless, it's the perfect time to pool our resources and get that MeCha island we talked about awhile back. We'll be self-sufficient. We'll hunt and gather. We'll build our own compound ... err ... great house. Everyone will contribute according to his abilities and receive according to his needs. And we'll build our own swimming pool. Not one of those inflatable ones -- we'll dig up some ground and pour cement in it and fill it with water. Someone will have to research drainage issues for all the on-campus plumbing. I nominate Hugh Janus.

The MeCha mansion will be open for business as soon as we get the funds, and it will be so awesome you'll never have to return to the real world, where "economies" suck. The MeCha mansion will not have an "economy."

Right. So cash in your 401ks and other various retirement and savings funds, and let's get to work.

If you like, I can handle the investments. Just paypal them to me. I'm trustworthy, I promise. That one time when I absconded with all the cash was just a joke. Really.
