Photo internship? Does such a thing exist, for magazines? [More:]

I feel like the vast majority (read: both) of Rhode Island's major magazines only hire freelance professional photographers.

How would a schmuck like me get his foot in the door for a magazine, photography-wise? Would I intern? Or would I just say "hey I'd like to freelance?" Or what?

I'm completely intimidated by the work of the photographers RI Monthly and Newport Life have used to shoot photos for their articles, but friends keep telling me it can't hurt to try. So. How do I try?
Yes, they do exist. They may not be 100% photography, but rather may include photo sourcing, research, and whatever other stuff they need done. You'll need to find out the details from the magazines in question. That info is usually on their website. If not a quick phone call should tell you what you need to know.

Maybe check out that Photographer's Market book in a bookstore and see if your magazines are listed. There's probably general advice for magazines in there too.

Call a photographer or photo editor or two, and ask to set up an informational interview with them for about 15 minutes. Pose your question to them, ask them how they got started, and then ask them what advice they'd give to someone like you who wants to get started.

This is probably the shortest road to a useful answer for you, plus it results in a couple of contacts you might be able to connect back up with later.

Never too early to start.
