Remakes We Love thread [More:]I love Grant Lee Phillips' version of Boys Don't Cry. Actually, the entire album (Nineteen Eighties) is pretty good.
Holy cow, I was just listening to that song, Lori! Yeah, the entire album is GREAT. I saw Grant perform a couple of years ago and he did a few tracks off that record as his encore.

That is too funny, scody. I like Grant's style/sound a lot. It's cool that you saw him live.

Neat, LT. Thanks for the dl.

I'm on YouTube more than a normal person should be. I only have three music videos favorited. I'm not sure why. It's kind of an eclectic mix. I'm always living in the past when it comes to music. Here's the downloads if you wish:

Boys Don't Cry - Grant Lee Phillips

Heart and Shoulder - Heather Nova

Tangerine - Led Zeppelin

My favorite Beatles song is "Rock and Roll Music" by Chuck Berry.

Great song/version. Thanks, Lori!

I liked Madonna's "American Pie". *ducks to avoid objects being thrown*

That's okay, Melismata. I dig Luka Bloom's cover of LL Cool J's "I Need Love."

Not nearly as much as the original! Please Hammer, don't hurt me?

I've always liked The Red House Painters' remake of Silly Love Songs.

Check out Hüsker Dü's cover of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" (starts at about 3:25). Big fave a mine.

Have you ever heard Sonic Youth's version of the Carpenters' "Superstar"? Absolutely amazing. It's not mocking or ironic at all... they genuinely took the song and made it brilliant.

ted leo's version of since you've been gone. he took a pouffy pink pop song into something smashing.

damn, forgot for a second. concrete blonde's version of 'everybody knows,' is pure full of awesome.

I think Frankie Goes to Hollywood do a great "War."

I swear I'm not taking the piss.

U2's version of "Dancing Barefoot".

Is this limited to just music? I clicked on the thread with the intention of stating just how much I prefer the newer version of The Thomas Crown Affair.

Thea Gilmore covering Phil Ochs.

(just got time to do this, finally)

Bauhaus' Ziggy Stardust

Mudhoney's cover of Bette Midler's The Rose

Thanks, BP. They play a lot of Grant on a radio station I listen to and this song grew on me.

Danf, Thea Gilmore did a version of Bad Moon Rising that is sort of eerie in a good way.

I never knew Mudhoney covered The Rose. Then again I don't listen to a lot of Mudhoney because I am old and grumpy.
posted by LoriFLA 09 March | 20:27
On the contrary, Lori, I would guess that most people who listen to a lot of Mudhoney are old and grumpy.

(Also, here's my favorite 'Bad Moon Rising' cover.)

I resemble that remark!

Yes Lori. . I have that one also. . .

I like Alanis Morrisette's cover of Seal's "Crazy". And Jeff Healey's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is actually better than the Beatles'.
