Saw the clip on Today this morning, but sound was down/I wasn't really paying attention. Lauer and co. seemed to be having a great laugh about it and I thought for a moment that the clip was shown accidentally shown while the hosts were discussing less tragic looking.
I always find it interesting when someone who has survived a horrific accident cannot recall anything about the event. What is the last thing they remember before? What's the first thing they remember after? Is this the byproduct of the brain's attempt to protect itself? Man, I'm full of questions today.
msali: I remember bending down toward the lawn mower when I was 4, but nothing about the amputation of two fingers, and little thereafter except fragments: my hand getting washed, climbing into some stranger's car, escaping from the hospital bed, a net over the bed, and getting my bandages caught in the net and tearing them off, ripping open the stitches.
I think the brain has a short-term memory, which is gradually laid down into long-term memory. So if something renders you unconscious, the long-term memory never gets stored.
So, it's not that they repress the memory: it doesn't get saved in the first place.
I saw it on the Today show as well. All of the patients watch the Today show. Thank goodness the guy wasn't hurt.
Lately one guy at work has been turning the station to Married With Children. Do you know how jarring Married With Children is at 6am? I forgot how much applause, hooting and hollering that show had.
I just saw this on the News yesterday, and wasn't it amazing... that guy should thank every lucky star he's got, while celebrating his newly found birthday.:)
