So I've had a temp drafter working with me the last few days and I just found out today...[More:]That he's actually a director at his contracting firm with a PHD in mechanical engineering, helping out temporarily until they can find someone else! Color me intimidated! How much are we paying this guy?!

He does do good and fast work, though.
As a temp, no one ever assumes that you have a decent resume. (I am, and I do.) They don't ever ask questions. They assume that you're fulfilling your potential performing whatever menial little tasks they allow themselves to trust you with.

It's interesting, and also disheartening.

(I meant that as a commentary on my coworkers, muddgirl, not on you. Sorry if it came across that way.)

I assumed he was a draftsman, which would ordinarily mean that he's got a decent resume and is way more qualified than I am to do the work I do. But yeah, I get your point.

I wonder if I can sign up with a "skilled temp" firm when I go to school in the fall. It actually sounds kind of fun - getting called up when there's an emergency, which is when I do my best work. Sort of like an engineering A-Team, except it would just be me.

omg I just got really confused thinking that mudpuppie was having a conversation with her (him?) self. Must . read . more . slowly

Don't beat yourself up. It's been known to happen.

Heh - it took me months to figure out that they were two different people! I used to get confused as to why she was gay and then she had a "muddude" - maybe that's how she referred to her girlfriend?

There were a couple of others I've mixed up too.

Tr33Hugg3r and Trinity-8-director too. NO IDEA WHY. Not like their names are even that alike.

In conclusion, I'm silly. And don't pay enough attention to peoples names.

I think it's the "ddg" in my name and the "dpupp" in mudpuppie's name. Even I've gotten confused from time to time.

By "it's been known to happen," I meant I've been known to carry on conversations with myself, in case that wasn't clear. And yeah, the Confusion of the Mud[d]s goes way back around here.

muddgirl, sounds like you might be making an important contact for the future.

My thoughts exactly, t8. Make sure you slip him your resume before moves on mud.... ummmm...dgirl.

Yes, I get confuseled too.

(Well, except I'm in Texas now and hopefully if I need contract work it will be in Seattle or Boston. But you're totally right, I should give him my card.)

Amen on the temping/resume stuff. I temp, and I have a good resume, and people are always shocked! shocked! that there's competence going on this establishment.

At my current job, they told me I had impressed them after I successfully alphabetized a bunch of mail. It does make you wonder about the other temps out there, that expectations are so low.

Temping has been 50-50 for me...they love me or they hate me.

Makes you wonder, well if I'm so bad, then why did the other places love me?

Basically, if you're a temp, you cannot make a mistake except during actual training (if there is any). First mistake..."We picked the wrong person. She can't do the job. She's out." First slowdown of work..."You're getting paid higher than anyone else here, so we have to let you go." (said accusingly, making you wonder if they don't even realize how much of what they're shelling out for you is going to the temp agency, cos you sure aren't seeing it).

I have had the rug pulled out from under me so many times from temping it's not funny.

You can learn a lot from temping and even meet some great people, but there's only so much crap you can take.

I am through with temping for real this time. I prefer doing secretarial work work part-time permanent while also delivering pizza and risking being held up at gunpoint again than temp any more. The bitterness and alienation consumes you.

Mock me not, stilicho.

Though I did see joannemerriam's comment in the recent comment page and did do a double take thinking it was one of mine I didn't remember writing
