05 March 2009

I'm having difficulty deciding who to root against.

*head explodes*

I'm not.

I find it hilarious that she thinks she has any clout with the kinds of people who love Radiohead music, or that anyone she has any clout with would ever listen to them anyway.

Doesn't Radiohead snub anyone trying to "meet them backstage"? I seem to remember Chris Martin gets snubbed at every awards show. Honestly, just because someone is famous doesn't mean they want to be friends with other people that happen to be famous.

The good news is, Miley Cyrus is a normal 16 year old girl.

The bad news: ditto + $$$$$$$$. Her and Taylor Swift are going to stay 16 forever, if they aren't careful.

They snubbed Kanye too. But he's a 16 year old girl too, so..

Heh, true!

Indeed. However, I also find Radiohead and the people who listen to them and take them seriosuly to be hilarious, so, there ya go...

Yes, because people who enjoy music and take it seriously are hilarous. Oh, you people and your hobbies!

I love and listen to them regularly. But I don't necessarily take them seriously. I think that a lot of their stuff is hugely funny, and intentionally so, but not everyone picks up on it. Paranoid Android is definitely full of humour.

jonathanstrange, if they had stopped after 'Creep,' they'd have been a fonsly remembered one-hit-wonder. As it stands, they are squarely in the tradition of art-college-mope-music in the Yes-Roxy Music-Cure-Smiths tradition.

omg how horrible... you mean she's like, not important or even on themental register to real musicians? particularly at a music award show when like, they might have other things going on?
posted by eatdonuts 05 March | 19:18
Creep is by no means their best song. Street Spirit is amazingly beautiful.

I can definitely see how it might not be to your taste - being more of a rock man yourself - but for me, the melodies that it takes a little time and work to discover are what make them so fulfilling to listen to.

actually, i think that reference in the interview wasn't that heart felt on miley's part. she was just being a teenage girl talking on the radio. If she really wanted to crush them, she'd have disney do it.

jonathanstrange: they're not a bad band, but the fact that they've become so inflated reputationwise makes me feel compelled to knock them down a peg. And the song I linked to in my last comment brilliantly deflates the teen angst of much of their following brilliantly. Not that I wasn't angsty as a teen (but not that angsty), but from my lat thrities i can see it for what it is.

As for Miley: I don't really have that much of a beef with manufactured pop-rock as a concept. Hell, I love the Archies, the Monkees and the Partridge Family. But the difference is that in those days the people doing the manufacturing knew what the fuck they were doing and had some fucking standards.
posted by jonmc 05 March | 19:37
Oh yeah, that's a normal feeling. I liked their music before I got a good comprehension of what their reputation was, so I wasn't that biased against them because of that.

Same with Harry Potter - but not with The Da Vinci Code, or the Twilight Series. Both of which I might have enjoyed a lot more (not that I read Twilight) if the fans hadn't been rabid and annoying.

In fact, Buffy is the only exception that I can think of. I was highly biased against it up until I watched it, now I love it.

I don't think there's anything particularly juvenile about Miley's comment here; this game is played all through life isn't it? If you're a journalist you want access; if you're a partier you want to be on the club list; if you're a politician you want to be invited to the lunch; if you're a businessman you want to get hold of an investor.. it's just a normal thing to try to get access and comment sometimes on not getting it. Maybe the idea is you shouldn't mention it on radio?
posted by Firas 05 March | 20:09
Heck this happens all the time with me. You want to have lunch with the important industry figure swinging by your town, you want to be invited to a particular event, you want to get written up in the right place. You also want certain people to show up to your dinner or get invited to their afterparty etc. etc. "Attempts at Access" are just a part of life.

I like Miley Cyrus. Did you know her real name is Destiny Hope Cyrus? She is a spokesperson for Daisy Rock guitars. I hope she gets to live her dream of meeting Radiohead someday. Thom Yorke is so cute.

Firas, I figure if I'm anti-social enough, and hate enough crap, then I'll avoid all that wanna belong stupidity. Who is this you that you are talking about anyways?

Maybe she can be a groupie or something...
posted by eekacat 05 March | 20:30
I don't think it's about "wanting to belong" though. It's more like planting seeds.. you can meet someone today and 5 years hence when someone's doing due diligence they might put in a good word for you, no? But yeah, if you're not into it, there's no point.. I just think of it as part of being professional.

Actually I just heard that youtube link and it's cringe inducing.. her voice and speaking style are really grating, and that's before she talks about how mad she is and would totally cry if she met them. If I was her manager I'd tell her that she's not going to die tomorrow morning and there'll be plenty of time to meet Radiohead..

Radiohead hasn't made teen angst music for a while now. It seems cruel to judge a band by their fans, even if their fans are celebrities.

Of course, I must remember that you don't like Yes, Cure, or the Smiths either.

Yeah. Now they write adult angst songs. Of course I'm amazed anybody writes angst songs at all anymore since the greatest one has already been written.

Was Destiny Hope Cyrus, she had it legally changed to Miley.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 05 March | 22:45
If your solution to adult angst doesn't involve pining for your own abduction by extraterrestrials, you might not like Radiohead. I like them -- they're a good band with an interesting approach -- and though I agree that "Creep" is their best song, I like plenty of their later stuff too. The "Creep" situation reminds me of Björk: I think the Sugarcubes' "Birthday" is the best thing she's ever done, by far, but it's by no means her only good work.

People like different music for different reasons, and people like to talk shit about others' tastes for different reasons. All understanding must come by this way.

Lift your arms and float away.
