One day I'll stop talking about Neko Case, but not today Her new record, Middle Cyclone, is out and it's really, really good. One song is murdering me with it's beauty...and I looked up the lyrics today. Read all together, they are pretty wicked too. A little timely as well, personally. And I want to share. Oh, and she's just announced some new tour dates, including Portland and Seattle...for you West Coasters! Lyrics and a link inside.[More:] Check this out and read the words too.

The magpie comes a-calling
Drops a marble from the sky
Tin roof sounds alarming
Wake up child
"Let this be a warning," says the magpie to the morning
Don't let this fading summer pass you by
Don't let this fading summer pass you by
Oh, and the rest of the song has lovely lyrics too, but...that last repeated couplet is what's haunting me today. Here's the rest:

Black hands held so high
The vulture wheels and dives
Something on the thermals yanked his chain
He smelled your boring apex
Rotting on the train tracks
He laughed under his breath
Because you thought you could outrun sorrow

Take your own advice
‘Cause thundering and lightning gets you rain
Run an airtight mission, a Cousteau expedition
To find a diamond at the bottom of the drain
A diamond at the bottom of the drain

[And here I go]
Mockingbirds sing in the middle of the night
All his songs are stolen, so he hides
Stole the mouth from whippoorwills, screaming car alarms
He sings, "I’m four years special"
He knows you're afraid of the dark
Come on sorrow, take your own advice
Hide under the bed, turn out the light
The stars this night in the sky are ringing out
You can almost hear them saying:
Close your eyes now kid
Close your eyes now kid
Morning's teeth are lit
They are waiting, waiting
Oh, they are waiting

Beautiful. I love her so much.

MuddDude and I have really started getting into Neko Case, starting with her work with The New Pornographers and recently her solo stuff. Fox Confessor gets heavy rotation amongst our friends and we're picking up the new album this weekend.

That said, I've heard previews of it, and I haven't really been super-impressed so far, but I'm an album kind of gal so that probably accounts for it.

Thanks for the file, richat. She was/is here this week sometime, but I'm too busy to catch it. CD is the CD of the month on my community radio. A friend of mine is really into her stuff, I look forward to hearing more.

Yeah, she's in Austin this week but I can't get up there for weekend concerts (unfortunately - I saw her at ACL last year and she puts on a great show).

Gah! Weekday concerts.

muddgirl, the album grows on you for sure. The first listen or two, I was of the opinion that it was good, but it wasn't killing me or anything. Now, a few weeks in...I'm loving it a lot.

I love Neko Case. 'Porchlight' is one of my favourite songs.

oh man, I love this new one. Much more so than Fox Confessor. I've been a fan of Neko's since The Virginian, and her stuff with NewPo's is a total bonus.

Sound Opinions podcast has a fantastic interview with her.

Also - this new one has an jaw-dropping cover of a Harry Nilsson song on it. Worth the 9 bucks alone, that one is.

Which is the Harry Nilsson song? I'm not familiar with his stuff. I haven't actually purchased the CD yet...I'm holding out for the vinyl. I think the cover warrants a larger format!

Wow. . Eugene! I'll have to go, even though I don't know THAT much about her. . .

Yeah, go danf, I can't IMAGINE ANYONE not enjoying her show. Her and Kelly Hogan sing together so amazingly. The band's pretty great too.

Heck, I gave my mom a copy of Fox Confessor for Christmas, and I'm still getting emails from her thanking me. And my mom is NOT hip in the slightest. THEREFORE anyone who's even remotely hip MUST like Neko. This concludes my clumsy fan-boy logic for the day.

NPR is offering a preview listen of the album, for those who are interested. I'm listening to it now, and enjoying it a lot. I saw Neko live a few years ago in Vancouver at the Commodore and she was amazing. Tears-in-the-eyes jaw-dropping amazing. She's playing here next month; I'll have to see if I can talk BOP into it.

The Nilsson track is Don't Forget Me, for those keeping score. I just bought this CD on sale at Our Nearby Old-Fashioned Real-Live Record Store.

Oooooooh...

She covers a Sparks song, too, right? "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth"?

I'm looking forward to this album.
posted by BoringPostcards 05 March | 15:19
That's a Sparks' song? Huh. Goddammit did Neko do ANY of her own work on this? Sheesh.

:-)

And that Nilsson song is really great too. Really wonderful REAL sounding piano. Probably one of the old lost battered ones she keeps in her barn.

I got this the day it came out, and while it plays on my player, there's a noisy spinning mechanical noise throughout, and my computer refuses to read it it at all. Anyone else having this experience? I am wondering if I should return it or if it is due to some special aspect of the CD my players aren't smart enough to handle...?

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you--richat, for introducing me to Neko Case. Now I'll be no longer lonely if there's nothing to do anymore...

And thank-you too, Elizard, for the NPR link... :)
