Can anyone tell me why No Fun, by the Stooges, reminds me of The Doors? It's really bugging me. In case you aren't sure which song I mean.
Iggy Pop was supposed to be a big devotee of The Doors/Jim Morrison, but I've never been able to hear any influence.

Yeah, I think there was a bit of a kindred spirit thing between Iggy and Morrison, in that they were both sort of interested in a darker side of things when everyone else seemed to be about sharing flowers and love and such. Both Jim and Iggy liked to antagonize their audiences to some extent as well.

The lack of organ in the Stooges stuff really makes any hardcore comparison tough, but man....there's something in No Fun that TOTALLY makes me think of (perhaps a specific?) Doors' songs.

I was really hoping somebody would have an answer for you, because this is wild. "No Fun" sounding like the Doors? I would never have heard it.

Could it maybe be because Iggy's vocal sounds laid over the top of the music? The Doors always sound a little bit like karaoke to me. (I say this as a fan, BTW.) "No Fun" totally sounds like a tape that somebody is singing over... there's no way he's in the room where all that chaos is going on.

Well I'm gonna go back to the ol' brain and see if I can make it spit it out. I'm SURE there's something there. Well, pretty sure anyway!

I think it's probably a couple things. Like the Doors, the Stooges are a small, tight ensemble produced with a lot of separation in parts -- each instrument, drums included, has its own riff, color, and space in the mix -- and the song is kind of an uptempo "Roadhouse Blues," without the swing.

Plus Iggy, like Jim Morrison, knows how to beat the shit out of a voice. "Passionate Lady!" "Uh come on!"

Here's my favorite band ever covering "Roadhouse Blues" with Robbie Krieger of the Doors.

Hugh, if BÖC is your favorite band, we SO need to get drunk sometime.

All I gotta say is, Buck Dharma's guitar solo on "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a living document.

Solo starts at 2:40, though the whole song is eight minutes well spent.

It's been a while since I played my BÖC LPs. But youtube has it all, even She's as beautiful as a foot.
