Making an offer I want to buy my Saucy Goose Press domain name back and am in contact with a domain reseller.[More:]

My initial offer was $10, and the guy's all, "Shyeah, come back with a real offer, preferably something like $4K USD." I wrote this in reply:

[DOMAIN SELLER DUDE],

Does this owner actually plan on doing something with it, or is he just holding it because he knows it used to belong to a very small co-op publishing company and could thus potentially be worth a lot of money? I am the original owner of the domain, but I let it lapse a few years ago due to lack of funds. It was always my intent to re-register, and now that I have some discretionary funds, I wish to do so.

I know that having this information would normally make a broker or a seller such as yourself wish to jack up the price, but I am hoping that I could purchase the domain at the standard or average price of a domain sold in the U.S.

I hope to hear from you soon.

The dude's all, "Make me an offer." What should I reply?
Figure out what you you're willing to pay and offer him half that. Negotiate.

Either that or tell him that you're not going to waste his time with negotiations, so you're gonna offer him 50 bucks. Tell him it's a one time offer.

Odds are, you're not going to get this without spending a shit load of cash. These people are scum. Just pick something new, and go from there.

On a side note, I like to make stupid offers for metachat.com from time to time. If I can waste some time, I'm gonna do it.

I forgot that this site was .org, and I thought you were claiming to get into bidding wars with taz. Which amused me greatly and for a great while.

I believe, TrishaLynn, that if you want to stick with some variant of the actual words 'Saucy Goose Press', you have an imaginative pool of people right here who live for making such suggestions. Just let us know when.

I know someone who has been stubbornly not wanting to pay more than standard price for a domain for quite a few years now. The registrant of that domain is not only holding on to it, refusing to sell, but on occasion he puts it up on auction sites with minimum bid of 5k. My friend doesn't have that kind of money and is in teh same pickle as you. Just thought I'd mention it since "stubborn" hasn't paid off in that case.

take the amount of years this guy has been paying for the domain (at ten a year or whatever it costs these days), add that up and double it. That's the very least you can get away with when it comes to blackmailers like this, I think. (Keep telling my pal to do this, but oh-so-stubborn)

I did the easy thing and registered www.saucygoose-press.com. Hey, if having a hyphen doesn't impede the guys at Penny Arcade too much, it won't cause too much of a problem for me.

But, I will also continue to try and get my regular .com. It is an almost moral imperative.

saucygoosepress.net and saucygoosepress.org are available; why not grab them?

I probably should, but I don't know if I have the extra money right now.

It will cost you less than what you will pay the slimeball now or later. Register as many as you can and have them all redirect to one. I suggest the .net since it is a business.

I have a hyphen in my main domain and it hasn't hurt me at all. Maybe if I try to explain it to someone who doesn't know what a mouse is, but otherwise no issues. That and I have business cards with the domain and so I just hand someone the card.

Unless you are willing to go to an arbitrator you won't have any luck with the slimeball. There are domain arbitrators, I am just not familiar with them. I suggest also asking this on AskMe if you have an account there.
