From the "Solid Pair of Brass Ones" File: Microsoft demands return of severance pay from laid-off employees.
I wonder how much they overpayed by.

According to the updated story (where Microsoft says, uh, um, err, never mind), it was about $4-5k per person.

Overpayment traced to use of monoculture enterprise software?

A certain very large computer company that I used to work for told us that Microsoft's payroll was done on one of their mainframe computers but that MS would never admit that.

They must have used the calculate tip function from the MS Restaurant Server.

Wow, that's pretty bad. If they employees didn't have enough reason to resent MS before....

Microsoft came to their senses.

Did MSFT tell employees they getting X and then pay them some greater amount Y, or did they pay them Y and later told them they should have been told X? If it's the former, this seems like SOP--when this happened to me, I didn't even get a letter. My employer used their right under the direct deposit agreement to suck the money right back out. If it's the later, that's shitty of MSFT.

People - the Payroll Department's address is right there in the letter - why not send them a piece of your mind about this?

Microsoft Corporation
Attention: Payroll Dept. - Repayments

Worth a shot, right?

What will you say? That you think Microsoft should pay people more than both parties agreed to in their severance agreements? It seems like that was the case.

mullacc, it is important to hate Microsoft because they are a corporation that makes money and refuses to feel guilty about it. They should be more like Apple. Its OK for Apple to make money because they're not Microsoft and they're cool. Clear enough?
