The Distillation of the Current Republican Strategy for Regaining Power and Relevance Apologies to non-USians and Republicans here. But this just pisses me off SO much.[More:]

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports the two-term senator's remarks came when he said he supports conservative judges "and that's going to be in place very shortly" because Ginsburg has cancer.
So, um... he thinks that if she dies obama will appoint a conservative?

do senators get drug tested? since he's clearly smoking the crack.

(as well as being a RAGING ASSHOLE OF THE HIGHEST ORDER)

So in addition to being an incredibly callous, rude, and tone-deaf vulture, he's also the opposite of politically astute.

What a dumbass. I can't get mad about something so stupid, particularly since reality will prove him wrong anyway.

Also, since when did we have more than one Republican here at MeCha?

That was the same dude who refused to debate his election opponent, and then said the dude looked like one of Saddam Hussein's sons, isn't it?

Ah, yes. Time called him the Underperformer. In '04, he won his election by two points, while Bush won his state by 20. In '10, his own party is apparently urging him to retire.

He's also a former pro baseball player--did they wear helmets in those days?

Oh, also, this. Let's call it a punchline contest:

That's got nothing to do with being a Republican and everything to do with someone obviously disengaged the part of his brain that THINKS BEFORE SPEAKING.

What an outrageous stupid thing to say....
(And I was under the impression I was the lone Republican in the room-did another one turn up?)

Bunnyfire, I classify myself (when I have to) as anti-federalist, meaning that I favor a weaker central government and stronger states. This puts me most often in the position of voting Republican only because the other options are far worse.

So, if I had to choose between D and R, I'm closer to R.

trinity, sounds to me like you're a libertarian. At least you sound like the self-described libertarians I know. Did you favor Ron Paul, perchance?

"Is this what you'd call a wide stance?"

I hate to defend Republicans but this has more to do with Bunning being a complete nutball than his being a Republican. That said, the GOP does seem to be pretty effective in recruiting nutballs.

I'd consider myself a conservative in the Frank Zappa mold. Republicans have had very little to do with conservatism for quite some time. Too many republicans are too "family values" and religious for me to vote for them, and unfortunately that seems to be a litmus test to run for an office as a republican any more, the libertarians are way too kooky for me to vote for them, so that leaves me with reasonable democrats and "other".(Which is funny since "other" is how I'm registered). And, honestly, there really isn't any conservative or liberal party in America. We have democrats and republicans which really aren't that different except for a few social issues.

So, the short answer, bunnyfire, is you're probably pretty lonely as a republican. If you were actually a conservative, then you might have more company.

Pie, I avoid the libertarian label because it is difficult to distinguish between libertarian and Libertarian. I find the Libertarian Party to be pretty loony. Apologies if Paul's your guy but no, I don't favor him.

Besides, saying 'anti-federalist' helps avoid being stereotyped. OTOH, I do believe government is the source of our problems, not the solution.

I used to work with Bunning's nephew. He was a nice guy. The Nephew, that is. and he was waaay to the other side of the political spectrum. Although, his uncle did give him a baseball autographed by the Big Red Machine that I'll admit to coveting.

Woo! *high-fives trinity8 and other non-Libertarians on the site*

I was using the phrase 'small-l libertarian' online long before Paglia appropriated it. As noted above about Republicans abandoning consevativism and Democrats having never approached true liberalism, Libertarians are not all that libertarian.

I noticed my regular MD-type doctor switched from the Libertarian Party to the Republicans to run for the House in 2010. A bit awkward since his ideas on national healthcare closely parallel Hillary's, but of course, she was conveniently removed from that picture.
