Techie help. [More:] I acquired a video file. The soundtrack was ac3 encoded and didn't play with sound in windows media player no matter what codecs I installed. Once I installed VLC media player, it had sound and played perfectly. When I tried to burn it to a DVD 9with windows dvd maker), I was told it could not be done because the files had not been decoded correctly. What do i have to do?
You need to get it to an MPEG2 encoding. I'm not sure what the best solution for windows is (I'm assuming this is an .avi file, containing DIVX or XVID video...)

Lifehacker seem to suggest DVDFlick as a simple and free option.

Are you just copying the avi onto a data DVD or trying to burn an actual DVD disk?

Burning an actual DVD disk to be played on my TV. The DVDFlick looks like it'll do the trick. Thanks.

If that doesn't work, then vlc has export options. You can choose a video and audio codec to convert to. It's fiddly though, so if you try that route then be prepared for frustration.
