So I was thinking of getting a Kindle, but... There is NO 3G support in my area and no plans to add it anytime soon. Seriously, it's like a 45 minute drive to the nearest area. I know it should still work with 2G, but I'd like to know if any of you guys have experience with using the Kindle on a 2G network. especially speed.
Do those things actually exist? They're like the unicorn of gadgets.

taz seems to really like hers. She probably has 3G in Athens, though.

I would love to get one of these, but if I were going to invest I'd want it to do a bit more. Basically I guess I'd want it to have full web access, wifi for when I'm on my home network, and a comic book reader would be nice too.

Not to derail, not to judge, but I have absolutely no idea what the attraction is with these things as opposed to, say, a real-live book. Can someone describe it to me?

(Honestly curious.)

Mudpuppie, I don't read books online much but my wife does, on her Google Phone and the attraction for her is that you can store hundreds of books in one compact unit. She reads three or four books a week.

Taz has one and seems to like it a lot.

The Spousal Unit has one (because I bought it for her). I've read one book with it. She enjoys it a lot. I liked it as well. I was able to buy her a ton of history books for next to nothing.

Don't think of it as a mini notebook, but as a digital book that can access the web. Tons better than, say, a laptop, for readability. The digital ink is very easy on the eyes.

I'm not finding the tech books I want for it so I'm not really pressing to get my own.

I love mine, but I can't help you with the 3G/2G question because I don't have the kindle wireless connection, which is only available in the U.S. I do know where you can get help, though: check out the Mobile Read forums. More information than you can shake a stick at there, plus you can ask anything and get help.

Pupps, the reason it's fabulous for me is that it's expensive and difficult for me to get English language books and an E-reader is perfect for my situation... I literally have thousands of books on my hard drive now. I'll nevah go hungrah again!!! *sobs*

If you check out all the free classics on Manybooks.net, you'll see that you can pretty much have a full classical library for free, which is stunning.

One feature that I really like is that you can look up any word immediately without setting down your book, getting out the dictionary, etc. And if you have the connection, you can also check out anything on the web... so if you come across a reference to, say, the War of Roses, you could connect and get background for that without even putting down your "book".

At any rate, the price is still too high for most people that don't have a particular need for it, in my opinion. If you travel or commute a lot and carry around tons of books, it will be very handy. If you live in a small place and don't have room for all your books, it's very handy. If you read a lot and love gadgets and tech, it's kind of irresistible.

I got my Kindle in August, and it's more than paid for itself by now in terms of what I would have spent buying books here and ordering them with shipping costs, etc. (actually, in terms of books read, it paid for itself in just the first two months alone - but I would have been frugal and not bought that many paper books).

If you have any other questions that I might be able to help you with, agentcorvid, don't hesitate to email me.
