Me, too Just got 90 days notice that my job is ending.→[More:]Well well well. Still in shock, but of course, I saw the writing on the wall. Just wasn't sure if it had my name in it or not.
They cut the staff by a full third. Skeleton crew remaining. The only bright side is I won't be here to try to run the place in that miserable situation.
Man, miko...I've noticed a few comments of yours of late that suggested, as you said, that you were aware that this might be a possibility and I quietly kept my fingers crossed for you. This sucks. I'm hearing more and more bad economic news lately, and at the risk of stating the obvious, I don't like it.
That sucks, although 90 days is pretty nice notice. Certainly better than "here's a box, clean out your desk now". It's going to be a fun few years coming up.
Wish I could go, mgl, but I hadn't been planning on it...on the other hand, hm, why not? MAybe I should. I can drive to Philly and I have friends I can stay with in that area. Might be a smart move. I have to go to AASLH in August because i'm on program committee, - I was gonna have to foot my own bill for that since travel was cut, but we'll see what happens, it's a long way off. I'm glad you mentioned AAM though. I will give it thought. If I go and you're going let's defintiely meet up.
Ah crap, Miko. You are obviously so competent and valuable - shit - you're going to have the overqualified factor to think about. Man. I'm sorry. That sucks.
Damn, Miko, I'm sorry to hear this. I can't help but think any employer that would willingly let you go is an employer that is messed UP.
(And though I know it's thin consolation, this -- "The only bright side is I won't be here to try to run the place in that miserable situation" -- is very true. A dear friend of mine who's a VP in a Ginormous Financial Org found out Friday that her entire staff was laid off, leaving her to run the whole region, and bring a dozen pending huge projects across the finish line, by herself. She's really not sure that she wouldn't have rather joined the layoff list...)
Oh, boo. I'm so sorry. I agree that it's better than the surprise "you have an hour to get your stuff and leave" (that's what I got) but it must be very disheartening to work somewhere for three months knowing this.
Echoing "that sucks." But you'll get some unemployment, and 90 days from now is May. I've always been laid off in winter. Summer is nicer. So I hope you can get a little bit of time to enjoy it.
Ouch. Knowing you (as I don't in any real sense, but that won't stop me theorising ;-), you'll use this to springboard into something far better and, in a year, you'll be sending a thank-you note to your boss for giving you the opportunity to move on.
Quoted for truth. (And to give LT today's gold star for hilarious similes.)
I'm really sorry to hear it, Miko. I hope it turns out to be a crazy blessing/opportunity in disguise! With your all-around awesomeness, I'm pretty sure it will be. *hugs*
I can't thank you all enough for the kind comments. Many times I've seen someone post about a difficult incident and say "it means a lot." Now I understand that from the other side - yes, a few kind words of condolence from your internet buddies really do mean a lot. It does help! Thanks. It WAS time to move on but this isn't how I would have chosen it. I do believe something better will be around the corner. I'll keep you posted.
SO sorry to hear about your job. I hope you find something that satisfies you with a supportive, encouraging staff. One that makes you pinch yourself with wonder, and makes you ask yourself if your dreaming, if it's true that you could have found such a great job.
Wow. It sounds like your place is just sort of packing it in, then, hoping just to exist at a bare-bones maintenance level. I hope this bad thing nevertheless ends up working out for the best for you, sweetie... though I know that it isn't very comforting in the now. *whuffles*
(If I could be selfish for a moment here, I think you should write up/adapt your posts on the Blue leading up to the election into a book, you are an amazing social and political commentator!)
On the upside, you can come stay with me and librarina. The city needs someone sane to run their farmland and we've got lots of chickens and ducks to play with. Also, year-round growing season. Fresh veggies all year round!
Mmmm, local food advocacy... And, WA state has a special class of small-scale distillery license. Craft booze! And I know that my county's extension office just lost their web outreach person. I'll buy you dinner here.
(Note: I am trying to get in early on what I expect will be a large number of people and organizations trying their best to poach Miko.)
