Who's had King Cake yet? [More:] A really good one showed up in my office today so I was obligated to have a sliver and expound. Tell your King Cake stories or share pictures. Or link to a good history of the thing.
This must be an East Coast thing. . .

It's a Louisiana/Mardi Gras thing.

Also, I believe ColdChef's had his, but he's currently retrieving a dead guy from a field, according to Twitter.

I haven't had any and didn't get any last year, so I'm way overdue. I NEED SOME KING CAKE.

I have one right here! (I'm in Mississississippi for work.) It's good but just a leeetle too sweet.

Plus now they put the bebe on top of the cake, which really defeats the whole thing. Damn lawyers!!##%!!

Claudia_SF, I work in insurance, and some client or other sent the delicious cake, but with the bebe in a seperate little baggie, not in the cake. We assume there may have been litigation involved.

We don't celebrate Mardi Gras as such around here, but some cheap o king cakes appear at the local supermarket right before the big day.

Ah, King Cake. The king of all cakes. I usually eat from a dozen each year. You can't turn around in Louisiana at carnival time without seeing a king cake.

In fact, when I just got back from the abovementioned field (not as exciting as I hoped it would be), there was a king cake in the funeral home for tonight's wake. And yes, I took first slice. Prima Caketa, as it was.

In fact, I am buying king cake for any MeFite who comes to Mardi Gras this year. Good stuff, too. Cream cheese and blueberry filled. Cinnamon, apple, bavarian, Zulu. I'll have cake for everyone who shows. Good stuff.

Here's my little girl eating a chunk. She's not really a fan, but she's warming to it.

Thank you, ColdChef. I, um, went to Tulane. So I feel I can talk, but really, well, I can't like you.

Because of...?

yeah, I read that like that too...

but I think she meant "I can't talk about it like you can", not that she doesn't like you.

I like you Cold Chef!

It kind of looks and sounds like a Kringle, sans the baked-in baby Jesus and the frosting symbolism. "Hello! Wisconsin!"

I like you Cold Chef!

me too.

It's not kringle. Nothing is as good as pecan or raspberry kringle. OMG kringle. I love you kringle!

I miss King cake, but in Greece we have Vassilopita, which is similar in that it's baked with a coin inside, and whoever gets the piece with the coin has luck all year.

No, you guys, I'm pretty sure Rainbaby just can't like ColdChef because... well, isn't it obvious? Rainbaby? Who wants to be cooked inside a cake and offered to all comers? And then have your pain flouted on metachat? Sheeesh.

That never occurred to me. I just thought I had somehow offended her. Not that I spent hours on the computer last night looking through my history for dumb-ass things I said. No, not like that at all.

Oh, ColdChef, I like you plenty! I just was saying you're there every year and all and I'm removed from the experience.

Damn, I'd about forgotten about king cake. Now I'm seriously jonesin'.

hehe, taz
