03 February 2009

50 years ago today, Buddy Holly boarded a plane in Iowa with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper, and died when that plane crashed shortly after takeoff. I contend the music didn't die, though...
"Not Fade Away"
"That'll Be The Day"
"Everyday"

Also, here's a live performance of "Peggy Sue" on American Bandstand, from 1958. I love the very proper lady's introduction at the start of it.
A Rock-n-roll specialist indeed! That video is great.

I went to the museum in Lubbock a few years ago...I hadn't known he'd toured Australia and New Zealand.

I have to believe that he'd have stayed relevant, or, at least kept on making music that he felt good about.

derail: My office partner and I were talking music yesterday. . .he says that his faves are Kansas, Styx, and the Eagles. . .I feel like, if I wanted, I could kill him with some of the stuff on my iTunes. . .

It would be a mercy killing.

Nowaidaminit... Styx did Lady, Kansas had a killler keyboardist, and the Eagles have Joe Walsh. The rest of those three you can slam at will.

Buddy Holly played great songs, but for me, his greatest trait was he played a Strat.

The Eagles' "Desperado" is the best Tom Waits song that Tom Waits never wrote.

Styx did Lady...

I prefer Kenny Rogers' version (which, incidentally, is terrible).

I am suddenly very sad that Buddy Holly died before I was born.
