26 January 2009

So I'm sitting on my laptop with my back to a huge window when I hear a series of explosions.[More:]

And my laptop display starts flashing weird sparkling lights on the screen. And I realise the traditional Australia Day fireworks are taking place across the street from my place. (I live opposite the Botanical Gardens / Government House right near the city).

They're super pretty... but then I get all contrary. I noticed all the smoke left behind. And I really wonder about the wisdom in letting off so many shooting sparks of fire on what will be the hottest week in over 50 years. (Every day will be over 40 degrees C, or 104F)

I kind of wish I could enjoy them for the sake of the prettiness or something. But I just kinda can't anymore.

I'm not sure my laptop would work anymore if I started sitting on it. Consider yourself lucky if yours still does.

/also in a whiny vein of my own, I don't really enjoy the smoke machine effects used by bands

yeah - I have one of those super sturdy aluminium ones. That's the only reason it's still survived.

Heh. I gotta say, I thought this was a "I broke my laptop!" post.
Sitting on it, the screen starts flashing and the computer makes a ton of noise...

Lighten up, Ms. Strange! I can't imagine not enjoying fireworks.

I've gotten kind of sick of fireworks in the last two years. We seem to have them every week during the summer and I live four blocks from the river where they set them off so they're pretty loud.

Infidels! Philistines! I like pretty lights, not so much the big booms. I wish I were there. Instead, I am in a cold place, and my feet are cold. This does not make me happy.

Men like things that move fast, make noise, and explode. Combinations are especially enjoyed.

Most days this week will be total fire bans, but Jan 26 wasn't quite hot enough, I beleive, esp by the time the fireworks were due to go BANG. As dry as we are, the fireworks being over a river in an urban area is pretty unlikely to cause much hassle - we have fireworks once a month or so over the summer here & have done so for a while. Sometimes we get high winds and the hilarity of burning sparks hitting the tennis centre (remember that?)

I was in London on V ove everything day...was it 1995?, and dammit, those fireworks were awesomely pretty but I've never had to pull so much ashy shit out of my hair EVER. Everyone I was with including my daughter were covered in ash, and some of it was quite hot. It was hailing down on where we were.

Where was I? Yeah, that doesnt happen in Melbourne. Go look at the pretty and appreciate the skill of the artists that design the display and make it happen without incinerating us all.
